Bingo! Hand that man the prize. Don't worry if the shims don't quite add up to the nearest fraction of a thou. The shims might not be perfectly flat, the cases might not go back together precisely the same way, other mysterious factors might intercede, etc. I knew I would get there in the end. This...

If it isn't at least 8 thou. you'll have to compromise on endfloat vs. central rod. That is, you'll have to remove enough shims from the drive side to give the necessary minimum of 8 thou. endfloat, which will move the rod off center. Luckily, you'll be dealing with thousandths of an inch at this p...
