Without the factory record, then you can predict from the contract numbers what the engine number might have been based on the position of the frame number in the sequence. As Nev says, engines were swapped in use during the war and those records are long gone (although occasionally they do pop up)....
My magdyno dynamos do this. The electronic regulators, fitted inside the original reg boxes, seem to want a bit of current (generated by revving ) to wake up.

The 7/8" WNG bars are the most comfortable ones I have found. They are wider and higher then standard. I have them on all my ariels, regardless of age.
You'll get a hundred different opinions. Mine is that older specification 20w/50 is pretty good - SG is still widely available, which contains most of the bits, which get taken out in successive specifications for modern engines. A detergent oil is fine with a filter, keeps your sludge trap and oil ...
