Re: Square 4 MkI - too lean or too retarded?

IF the insulator is almost completely white I would be worried that the plug is too hot. This will only show up if you ride it hard (er) for about 3 minutes mainly on a long hill) At easy speed and in traffic that hotter plug won't be a problem, but an overhot plug can cause engine damage.. If you h...

Re: Piston problems Model C

Insufficient clearance It looks like. Perhaps the day was a bit warmer or your riding a bit more enthusiastic than normal. It takes thousands of miles to wear a bit of extra clearance on the piston and sometimes a piston will "grow " slightly. Don't file off the "heavily"dragged ...

Re: Ariel VG32 head

It usually originates at the exhaust seats and often between them. Yours looks as though the valve guide was too tight a fit in the head. It's been repaired before with what looks like eutectic (High nickel) weld. Nev

Maybe had suppression leads and "R" plugs too, to make that happen. Nev

Do you think this seat was used as original on the 30 models? I think that's where mine came from. Nev

Re: My 4G Restoration Blog

Done a big check up, Neither of the two 39 forks still here have the washers fitted. I've looked up the W/NG maintenance manual Book No.101/A1,3B and they are where you have fitted them. I cannot see what purpose they serve, though The nut is quite thin and a wider nut would seem to be a better idea...

Re: Ariel VG32 head

That's not uncommon in 4 valve heads. Is it between the exhaust valve seats? Nev

Re: My 4G Restoration Blog

I'm NOT an expert but I think they are used outside the nuts to protect them from the "end of auxiliary spring" fittings marking the nuts as I think they will foul the hexagons without them. The 3 W/NG's I've been involved with are that way and look right. One had a complete set of forks N...

Re: Flow rate from the oil tank

It's got a fair way to travel and the oil might be fairly thick. Anyhow you can take the Hex headed oil screen out of the back lower part of the tank and put wire down it or blow it out with compressed air.. The pipe end comes almost to the rear surface of the tank. IF you don't want to drain the ta...

Re: Lucas distributor for a Square 4

Your advance required is more revs related than much else. Making it pull will show if it's not correct as you will be down on power. You should be able to idle with some advance (before TDC) without any difficulty. Some like the dead slow idle you can get with a bit more retard, but the engine will...
