Re: Re: Daily Fixing and Riding Diary on a mainly Ariel 2018

To style the 'retro" bikes, the jap factories buy dozens of classic bikes and cut them up into pieces looking for "styling cues" that appeal to the particular market segment aimed at.

Re: SQUARE 4 CRANKCASE REPAIR

Maybe it would be best to take both cases along to an experienced classic bike welder, and let them advise you....I know from the small experience Ive had .that the patent "low temp weld' alloys are poison, and many welders wont touch a case where they have been used....I often wonder if the old ...

Re: Singles: main bearings and crankshaft instalation

Lots of quotes from bearing books, but you have missed the bit where a slip fit on a rotating shaft is sure to cause early failure......I never waste my money on costly rollers, ball bearings everywhere for me.....I would think pairing ball and rollers in one would be problematic due to likely differi...

Re: SQUARE 4 CRANKCASE REPAIR

I would get the first case welded up......whats the repair? looks like plastic glue..Provided its not one of the "solders",there should be no problem.....The case is also reinforced by the cylinder block when assembled....Keep the second case, though.

Re: Reversing the kick start quadrant.

I ve fixed them by welding up with HT alloy filler and recutting the teeth with a T&C grinder......incidentally,the first tooth should be sharp on top to mesh easily and not jam.,second tooth must also be relieved on the top,but dont reduce the diameter...You should mesh the teeth before applyin...

Re: SQ 4 MkII first start - oil and smoke....

I dont see restriction as a possibility......gear oil pumps are quite capable of 500-700 psi, unless very worn......normally scavenge pumps dont have any relief valves,so i suspect serious restriction in the oil tank end would cause the hose to blow off its fittings.

Re: CLEANING ALUMINIUM

There is a cleaner used on ally truck bodies and bullbars that leaves a clean shiny surface, but its very noxious to humans. It contains 3% hydroflouric acid, and effective protective gear must be worn when using it.Just needs to be swabbed on and washed off. Most bikes have a roughish sandblasted surfa...

Re: Fourth Gear Skip - GB Gearbox

Jumping out and into gear is very destructive for gearboxes.Best to immediately change to a lower gear and run home for repairs.I think the machining error refered to was pre war.......anyway,endfloat and wear in the box has the same effect. Some boxes have a cover or plate where the endfloat of inte...
