Re: Mk1 Sq 4

Not wishing to spread confusion but won't the marking before TDC on the front crankshaft be at about 1 o'clock, given that the front crank is geared to the rear one and therefore runs backwards? You’re right of course! I’m the one whose confused trying to write it down from memory. To be honest, I’...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4

Of course I didn't remember everything....

- TDC and BTDC on Nr 1 has to be on the compression stroke, of course.

Simon, Using the front crankshaft inspection hole instead of the engine sprocket is musch easier, because one doesn't have to disassemble half of the drive side, battery tray, etc.

"As a matter of interest - I would like to hear of the methodology used to actually strobe the ignition on a Mk1, thanks. John Hi chaps, this is how I did it – on a MKI, not sure if it works on other versions of the Sq4. It’s a bit messy, so don’t wear your best clothes and a bit of warm oil s...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4

On mine as well, just a short bolt as a plug. However, the rotation range of my distributor is still quite small. It either hits the float bowl or the oil tank. I’ve tried different positions for the flat - back towards the tank, 10 O’clock towards the bowl, and left it at 2 o’clock towards the outs...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4

TJ, All good points here. What bothers me is that you said when you retard the ignition (by turning the head, not a tooth) there is no change. There should be a change, unless something else is wrong - wrong or weak springs or springs in the wrong slots on your automatic advance. You could always tr...

Re: SQ4 Mk1 Otto gasket instructions

Paul Linden,

when you do the torque down, do you torque again to the same value given by the instructions, or to a lower value?

Try vinegar essence. Not the same as kitchen vinegar which is very diluted. Haven’t tried on a tank, but for chrome it works very well.

Re: Vinegar to clean rusted tanks?

Also good to “restore” chrome. Rub the part with aluminium foil stolen from wife’s kitchen soaked in vinegar. Be sure to wash it with water after and then use your favorite chrome polish.

Re: Fitting new valves and guides

The specs are there for a reason - too tight and they’ll seize, too loose and you’ll get oil flowing into your combustion chamber. And other problems which are just not worth it if you are rebuilding the engine. The best advice is to take it to a shop. If you can’t or don’t want to, then if you have...
