Re: Sq4 MKI blown head gasket

Hi Is it an anomaly with the photo or is there an area of cylinder block face missing where you have circled and annotated No 3? This would be co-incident with where the blow past / damage to the gasket occurred and probably the cause of it. I wouldn't be confident that a new gasket won't be ruined...

Sq4 MKI blown head gasket

Well Chaps, my season did not start too well. After servicing my square four, adjusting valves, etc, wanted to go for a short ride to see how everything was, and didn't really past the driveway. Noticed immediately that there was a blow by at the rear of No 3. This morning took the head out, and my ...

Re: Head torque

To be honest, and I’ll likely get stoned for this, I never managed to get a torque wrench on any nuts except the four inside the rockers before having the tank assembled. So in the end everything was tightened by feel. And no, my hand and wrist aren’t calibrated in any magical way. For the nuts betw...

Re: Square 4 MkI - too lean or too retarded?

Thanks for the links to the articles on reading spark plugs. Very interesting.
After reading them and examining my plugs again, I would say the mixture ist too rich and the timing could be more advanced.
Some more testing required…
Cheers

Also leaning that way. I have no washers under the float, so can't go any richer there.

Just to be sure with the ignition timing - Does it seem to be retarded by looking at my plugs?

Square 4 MkI - too lean or too retarded?

Hello chaps, After the first 200 miles this is what my plugs look like. I’m holding 1 and 2 in my hand, 3 and 4 look similar. The plugs are NGK B6HS. It looks too lean to me, but what’s your opinion? Since the jets are fixed, could it be that the ignition is too retarded? Or the plugs too hot? If th...

Sq Four MkI and Thorspark Ignition

Hello Everyone, I installed a Thorspark Ignition on my Sq 4 and was very happy with it. Easy starting, ran great. A few days ago the engine just died while in top gear, all lights out, all electrics dead. Fortunately I was just about to turn into the street where I live so I didn’t have to push her ...

Re: Square Four MkI - first rides after restoration

Hello Gui, thats a very nice Mk1. Congratulations. When I looked at the photos of your outing, it seems that the 2 front mudguard stays are too long compared with the red Mk1. Too long stays result in an uptilting mudguard. There are 2 different lenghs, the one for the valanced guard and the other ...
