Re: Vid on Indian girder forks

As a systems engineer can say something about that. Critical paths. Failure modes. Testing! If it scares me I always make sure to break a copy of whatever it was first before I subject myself or someone else to it. Story about the double edged sword of stats and a program to take note of the bullet ...

Re: Vid on Indian girder forks

Adrie are those the earlier forks like on the 25/26 with the springs down each side? Druids? Had a look in the Ariel Black Book which has basically become my bible. For the 29 it says ... "1929 saw the introduction of the tension spring front fork design ( previously the suspension compressed t...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Also on the topic of what is pukka and not so pukka I do remember an occasion where I was about a week in to a particular desert trip in Australia and feeling rather pleased with myself for having got that far on some cobbled together affair not much beyond a two stroke bicycle and then from nowhere...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Something I forgot to mention about the forks that made me laugh was they seem to have come out of the same spot in regional Victoria as the frame did so many years ago and I have a vague memory that parts on the table at the particular jumble were similarly tagged and labelled as a tag that is on t...

Re: Vid on Indian girder forks

I saw a note in the black Ariel book about putting a belt around the girders because collapses were common. Very reassuring it was. Much more confident after reading that !

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Indeed. Knackering the rare remains of the past with my nasty gammie grubbers ! Seriously though my thinking was that finding bits that fit brings me one step closer to more of a motorcycle and since my intent is to fix it and ride it and enjoy it I think that is all right. In my opinion snobs have ...

Re: Vid on Indian girder forks

Pictures of the forks I picked up over in my thread about my 28 basket case here : http://forum.arielownersmcc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=9376&start=60#p78333

Didn't mean to take this off topic about the dodge Indian forks. Blundering about as usual!

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Girder forks arrived today. They were listed as BSA. They do appear to be straight. I am not sure what weight they are. I am guessing light weight? But they fit in the hole so that is once again a surprise.

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Dug in to it deeper today. Typical mouse nests removed. Top end I feel I can definitely do something with. Cylinder looks like quite a bit of meat left in the liner but also quite bad pitting. I'll not know the extent of the damage to it until I clean it up a bit more. But I think I see some deeper ...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Thanks Adrie, I was kind of hoping this is how it would go and took a punt but I wasn't entirely sure it would actually fit. So I just learned something. Cylinder has good fins on it and the top looks pretty good but the bore has seen better days. Down around the very bottom where the liner comes th...
