Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Been away from this for some time sorting out new house. Could it be that even though the bike left the factory in a particular configuration by the time it got to the exporters it had been modified? Seems to me that this is the specification for the bike as it was shipped. Not as it left the factory?

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Found out that Tozer, Kemsley and Milbourn Ltd was still in existence until not very long ago before it got subsumed in to a holding by a larger company. I am not sure what they would mean for any records they might have had. Trail might stop cold at this point in my research and need to be picked u...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Sent out the cad files for the rear engine brackets today to the laser cutter. Next month I will most likely media blast frame and cover it in some throw away protective primer. Then start on the jiggery pokery to hold it all together. Formulating a plan for the bottom tubes. Think I will need to ge...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Right had a go with chalk. Did not help much. Is such a fine detail that even when I brushed it off with a brush it just filled the parts that can already be read and did not reveal anything else in the worn off parts. So I wiped it down with some acetone and took a picture from the side. That seeme...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

What is the best way to clean up the frame number? At one point I considered going at it with a wire wheel but I decided just to leave it alone rather than making it even harder to identify. I did think about getting some tracing paper and going over it with a pencil ? I'll see if I can take a bette...

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

That is most interesting!

Does that mean this motorcycle was not a direct import to a dealer in Australia?

i found a list of vehicle registrations for Dundee for the time period 1928-1929. I see some Ariel's in the list to.

Re: 1928 Ariel some wood and some tape ..

Well that was satisfying. Thanks to yet more excellent help front brackets turned up today. Matched my own cad patterns to so that is great so I am on the right track. Next up the rear brackets. Then will start thinking about a bit of jiggery pokery to hold it all together for brazing.

Re: Heads: 1928 Ariel vs. 1963 Gold Star

Many years ago i came across an article somewhere about Val and inlet ports. I can't quite put my finger on it right now but I do remember it influenced my own work on a little single cylinder race bike I have. Something about them putting cones in the inlets at some point. Can't quite recall but th...
