Re: Daily Fixing and Riding Diary on an Ariel 2019

We went last month. Loved it. If I were a richer man I'd definitely get that electric one for my commute :¬)

Re: Can anyone i.d. this bike ?

Great looking pictures. Just a thought but in the 2nd pic the bike looks almost new and the rider young. In the 1st pic the bike looks more used, could it be that the 2nd was pre-war and the 1st was post war recreating the earlier shot? The rider look gaunt and may have recently returned.

Re: A matter of weight...

Spooky, at lunchtime I was reading a 1945 edition of The Motor Cycle and the letters page had one from some chap called Hartley listing all the benefits of heavier flywheels. Re: Heads: 1928 Ariel vs. 1963 Gold Star

Interesting :¬) I guess the other things to consider are the pressure in the pipe, the speed of the gasses and the length before it hits a point where the pressure can drop. In the article they talk about megaphones allowing a 42inch pipe even though the racing rules said it had to reach to the rear...

Re: Heads: 1928 Ariel vs. 1963 Gold Star

Yep, and added to that is the back-pressure caused by the length of the exhaust being important in keeping the correct flow of the gas through the head so a too free flowing exhaust can just lead to more mixture disappearing. And talking about inlets, my car has adaptive inlet tracts so you get a di...
