Re: FERCing final drive chain

The engine sprocket size can affect the number of links needed in the primary chain but all that does is alter where the gearbox mainshaft ends up in terms of the range of gearbox adjustment. With 22T instead of 23T and the standard size primary chain the mainshaft will be closer to the back of the ...

Re: Spark plug for 350 with tuning

If you PM me I will send you a slightly used Lodge HHN plug (which is pink) and you can try that out. I suspect you will find it works well enough but the reason they are now in short supply (according to the Green Spark Plug Co some years ago) is that I kept buying them and using them in Square Fou...

Re: Broken-up Magneto Drive Chain

I have had this happen, but on a primary chain. So did Lester Grant, also on a primary chain. Given that I don't think either of us had done anything serious to provoke such a failure, then the manufacture of the chain comes into doubt. Where previously I would buy chain from anyone, nowadays I alwa...

Re: Fitting magnets to an oil filter.

That is a fine example of the sort of improvements which can do no harm whatsoever and may well do an awful lot of good.

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

I am glad you got it going in the end and that only minor problems remain. A few days ago I started the Mk I which I have been working on for a Club Member for the first time. The technique of full (bi-starter) choke, kick over each cylinder compression, turn on ignition and kick again had it runnin...

Re: Morgo Pump air Lock?

Before you even try to start the engine again, pour at least a pint of oil down through the rocker boxes into the sump. If the pump isn't working the circulation of oil by splash from the cranks dipping into it will go a long way to prevent engine damage. Having just rebuilt a Mk I engine for a Club...

Re: 1938 SQUARE FOUR ENGINE PLATES

Flat washers generally, but spring washers are sometimes found on the two bolts with the D shaped head which go through the main rear down tube.

Re: speedometer type

The Chronometric speedo, as the name implies, works in a manner similar to that of a clock. As a result, it is highly accurate, provided of course that the gearing to drive it is correct. On Ariels, it uses a flex speed (speedo cable rotation at 60mph) of 1610. The PA speedo works on the governor pr...

Re: 1955 NH 350 cc con rod dimensions

All NH350 engines have the same big end as the VB and VG with a taper fitting crankpin. These are, and always have been, fairly easy to find so unless your engine has been modified for racing by someone I would expect the standard taper pin big end to fit without any trouble at all.

Re: Fly wheel lightening

Many years ago I was running a VH with sidecar. The VH had highly polished flywheels which I suspect were lighter than standard, although maybe not by much. The big end began to knock so I fitted a set of somewhat heavier VG flywheels. The improvement in performance with the sidecar was considerable...
