Re: solex - poor mpg

I eventually found my original problem was that the timing had slipped on the distributor, probably on that run on new years day. Took a while to figure it out but trial and error got the bike working properly again. In future I will use the fully advanced position for timing as I think the static t...

Re: Sq 4 MK II (Solex) Reluctant to cold start

Paul
when you get the bike running what happens if you apply the bi-starter when warm?
If the answer is no change, then the bi-starter must not be functioning as the bike should instantly stall

Re: solex - poor mpg

Well at long last I have pulled the carb off and inspected it. The air correction jet looked partially blocked so I blew some air down it which seemed to clear it. I then (for some reason not even known to me) blew air down the other end and then it looked restricted again - couldn't see daylight wh...

Re: solex - poor mpg

Chris thanks for the advice. I think the dimple you mention refers to the section on the top of the float which has a sort of dimple but mine is a greater depression within that caused by wear. I will certainly give the idea of changing washers a go as in the past I have noticed that the bike does i...

Re: solex - poor mpg

actually - thinking about it I believe I have another better condition float kicking around in the garage so I will make a substitution and see if there is a difference. The bistarter needs full choke on cold but soon goes back in - less then a minute. Still I will check it is not sticking and fully...

Re: solex - poor mpg

thanks for the replies. I will have to check engine braking next time im out on it but I don't think it is overly noticeable. One thing I must pay attention to is the float height though, as the contact point on the float to the shut off valve is a bit concave from wear. I had thought of applying a ...

Re: solex - poor mpg

Thanks Bob
I was hoping for 40+ mpg at least.
Not sure how these carbs respond to ultrasound cleaning and the like - wondered if that might help

solex - poor mpg

I took the square 4 for a blast on new years day covering over 70 miles at speeds between 50 and 70mph On the way home I had to hit reserve despite having a good few gallons above the reserve line prior to the journey. I estimate I was getting around 35MPG or so. No leaks - not an overly rich mixtur...

Re: SQ4 Brake Light Switch

Simes I originally bent the brake rod to fit long before fitting the lower guard . Fortunately it did not need bending again. Attached is the best I can do with the bike in the garage hopefully the brake switch can be seen, and although everything is close , there is no fouling or other contact - De...
