Fork return springs and teardrop primary cover would make it 39 onwards. The tank is the 'triangle' kneepad type which ended in 37. Handlebar levers are not solid types.

I had something recently which you may relate to... There was a mysterious oil leak on my 38VH between the magdyno and the timing case. There is a thick rubber washer and the magdyno must be at 90 degrees to the timing case, this sounds obvious but there is some wiggle room when tightening the 3 bol...

The club registrar holds a copy of the factory records and can look up your Ariel and tell you whatever was noted against your bike when it left the factory. The original records are in the VMCC library just in case you live anywhere near Burton.

I think that my previous drawing was misleading. Here is another one which shows the landscape a little more clearly. The iron head and iron barrel are estranged due to a tall cylinder liner. I have bought myself a Guzzi as I need to get out there and ride and I'll come back to the Ariel when I can ...

Thanks for all your above comments. I think that the cylinder liner is too tall and prevents the faces of the barrel and head from meeting. The solution would be to take the engine apart again and have the top of the liner taken down. Another possibility might be to insert a copper gasket? Anyway, I...
