One point could be the sealant. I did use Loctite ultra Copper, but I did smear a bit along the whole gasket sutrface, and not just a bead around the push rod tunnels. That along with not properly torqued nuts around the rear - especially the two under the manifold, could have led to this....[/quote...

Never seen this on a Otto equipped Square. Could be a torque or surface thing. After fitting a SQ4 head, I run it for some (5)minutes in the workshop, let it cool down and retorque. Here you'll find a lot of setting. Than 50-100 moderate km - retorque, 3-500 more km and retorque, and always, dont't ...

Yes, they are on the tight side. I've noticed this on three different sets, even the small end.
You have to ream or polish them to size.

Thats usual on my Ariels too - the squares needs one or two kicks more. Nearly all my friends with modern bikes fail if they try to start first time in the year, they have to go first to a shop, buy a new, very expensive battery and try again. They all use over the winter expensive electronic batter...

these are available from our club too, its the later design.
I'm looking for earlier ones.

If nothing turnes up I have to change for a later gear set.

I know it will be difficult but I'll give a try.

Looking for the second gear pair of an early BA box.
Or a late BA box or the complete internals.
