Re: VF31 with double ball bearing crank -advice

Hi Ian My 31 VF ( Shipped in June 31 ) here in Canada had the helper springs on the rocker box as well. I removed them as I felt they were not really needed. My cam was a "F" type but replaced that with the 664 cam. Piston is NOS low compression. I had the "G" Exhaust guide & ...

Re: Following the Cannonball on Instagram

I agree on the 2 stroke oil. Trials riders use 100:1
Cheap oil today are far superior to oils used in the 70's.

Re: Wanted of topic norton ES2

After riding my 36 Es2 with a 38 Es2 motor I can say it is fun to ride. My 53 VHA is faster ,Both seem to handle nicely ,Both brake work reasonably well. Both are smooth at speeds up to 60mph..haven't had them past that. The VHA returns about 60 mpg , the ES2 a remarkable 90 mpg For some reason I st...

Re: Following the Cannonball on Instagram

I'm curious why Norton in 1931 used an oil control ring with no lubrication to intake or exhaust valves guides other than a squirt to them before a ride. As with others My 31 with a straight bore, new rings at .010 gap still burnt oil at a good rate. approx 400 ml in 80 miles. it burnt enough over 5...

Re: Following the Cannonball on Instagram

Congrats Charles on finishing the Cannonball. This year I added an oil control ring to my VF. I just add a bit of 2 stroke oil to the tank. I also find it interesting that my 31 Norton 20 came from the factory with an oil control ring and NO provision for lubrication for either valve. They lasted ! ...

Re: Black Ariel Chain Oiling Problem

On my 31 VF I blanked off the top breather, i found the little ball would stick and spew oil all over the cover.I used to have a breather from the bottom of the timing cover to the primary chain but now have installed the later breather and as I found out it was used from 31on.I now just lube the pr...

Re: Low detergent or NONE detergent oil Single engine

Bruce, I stated using Shell Rotella 40w oil in my 31 although I'm still using Kendal 50w in the 53 VHA
After a long ride the oil tank on the 31 doesn't get hot even on one of our sweltering days.
The 31 has an easier life than the VHA

Re: Almost finished!

Very Nice Lee ! I wish I knew if mine came with a Blue seat but the seat cover had rotted to dust when I bought it in 77.
I did find a 53 20" wheel up stairs in my garage attic not long ago I forgot I had . still has the wedgewood Blue like yours on it yet.
