Hi peoples, Guy - black smoke on blip? is it soot or oil based - check with finger up the tailpipe; - dry & dusty soot or sticky oily claggy soot? An alternative to the finger is to hold a clean rag over the tail pipe & blip it a few times - then inspect deposits visually, by touch & by ...

Chirp? - head gaskets almost undoubtedly - BetFair won't offer any odds... Only when hot & on load? - check to feel with bare hand for blowing twix head & barrel &/or use a compression tester - compare all four pots. Quite possible to ride along with ungloved left hand to help indentify....

hi Cam - polite reminder that use of the ramped cam implies tappet clearance to be in = 0.006" & ex = 0.008" i.e. NOT the both at 0.001" (bare clearance) of the original Mk1

Hi Allen - d'ya get your timing sorted? - as far as "engineering" - if you want top quality engineered motor machining then use Thomas Hamlin, based in Somerset which is a pain but absolute dog's dangly bits... (Andy BigVee knows his Sq4s)... but they're not a ride in & fix it establis...
