Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

A few quick items Pete - Rotor arm screw - it undid OK, but difficult to break the taper, a bit of heat helped and now its separated which simplifies setting distributor timing. Paul - Gasket mod, yes I did this . Paul - By the way can you send me the Coil Conversion Article (or a reference to Cheva...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello Folks I have no idea where CDI or Electronic crept into this - my system is the traditional coil system with negative earth, condenser is mounted on the coil 0 which is earthed. I have sparks at the plugs - but I don't have a running engine...…...is it Ignition (Timing or Weak Spark) or Solex/...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello Everyone, I might have posted something like this earlier today - Digitally Challenged Again. The Magneto serves as the place for the Contact Breaker. The windings, condenser, HT Pickup etc are not used. Lacking a Greaser Dashpot 464261 I made a locator - a bit like the locator for the speedo ...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello, I am back in circulation, the issues with the car warning lights are resolved. I took a long look at the distributor and its drive. The gears are in good shape. I found a note in the workshop manual " If the dynamo is ever removed.... take car not to turn the engine, otherwise magneto ro...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello
I have no idea about the origins of the conversion, it was on the bike when I got it.
The conversion might have been done in Japan, but I think its more likely to have been done in UK in Late-Eighties.

Chris

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

I hope its attached.
You can see its a purpose made conversion and not just a simple rehashing of the magneto points.

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

I am away from the bikes for some days.
I was trying to post a picture of the coil conversion showing the modified Contact Breaker - failed dismally.
How do I attach or insert the picture ?

Regards
Chris.

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello Folks A quick update. I put the battery on charge (although it was near fully charged anyway). Following Simon's advice, I took the Solex Off, separated the carb & float chamber and I filled the chamber with water - yes the water came through into the well. I also revisited the BiStarter, ...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello Everyone, Let me give an update. With Solex off the bike, BiStarter assembled and the throttle body open - in Full Choke position I was able to blow through the hole in the throttle body; in half choke it was more difficult to blow and in No Choke it blew through OK. I fitted a new Throttle Bo...
