Re: cleaning off crankcases

Thanks Simon, They did a good job on my M21 frame and even re-did one piece that they weren't happy with. I'll be using them again shortly and trying some of the more exotic finishes - chrome and gold on a Matchless that just landed in my lap - so it will be interesting to see how good those finishe...

Re: cleaning off crankcases

I used a company called Phoenix in Poole before I moved up to Norfolk http://www.phoenixmetal.co.uk/ That's one of the reasons that I then got my own cabinet! I've just used Aerocoat in St. Olaves for blasting and powder coating an M21 that I'm building and see that they also offer vapour blasting b...

Re: cleaning off crankcases

I wash in petrol to get all the oil/sludge/gunk off and then blast with glass grit to clean up. Then I blast at low pressure with glass bead to give a satin finish. I then blast again with air to clean out most of the blasting media and finally rinse in hot water to remove any remaining particles. B...

Re: Looking for trouble Mk2 Sq4

Hi, just found this thread while away on holiday. I wouldn't claim to be an expert but have just finished building a SQ4 Mk2 from a completely dismantled basket case and it hasn't gone bang yet! By complete coincidence I'll be driving up through France from tomorrow morning and planning a stopover T...

Re: Recurring weak spark SQ4 Mk2

Many thanks, parts ordered as suggested. I'm still thinking about electronic ignition options and see that there have been a number of previous posts on that topic. If I do go that route then I think a 12V conversion and a system that uses an electronic advance/retard will be best as there is quite ...

Recurring weak spark SQ4 Mk2

Since my rebuild I've had a number of experiences of difficulty or failure to start which I've traced to a weak spark. Each time I've replaced the coil and the problem has been solved for a while but then seems to reoccur. I've tried new Lucas and others and also some old Lucas originals from other ...

Re: SQ(ueek) 4 !

Well, it wasn't an air leak at all. Current suspicion is a dry LHS exhaust rocker. Running the engine with the rocker covers off I'm getting healthy dripos from both RHS rockers but less from the LHS inlet and hardly anything from the exhaust. It could be a restriction in the feed via the 'U' pipe f...

Re: SQ(ueek) 4 !

Haha! Yes, it takes all sorts! Maybe just as well I was off the river at the w/e as it's Broads hire boat change-over time and it's quite entertaining to watch the game of dodgems as the holidaymakers try to master the controls of boats that they really shouldn't be allowed to drive!! I'll try that ...

Re: SQ(ueek) 4 !

Hi Simon, it's ihe long inlet pipe from the carb to the head - not sure if the Solex is the same but the SU casting is secured by two bolts at the back and one at the front. Would have taken it for a spin this afternoon but been changing water pump impeller in my Yamaha outboard - would test the pat...

Re: SQ(ueek) 4 !

I think I tracked it down - seems the thread on the front mounting bolt for the inlet pipe has stripped and the bolt was loose. I think the sound was air being sucked in. It will need a helicoil to fix properly but hopefully my quick bodge with Loctite will last long enough for a test run.... Cheers...
