Re: Tight spot magneto drive chain

Checked runout of mag and cam shafts and they run true. Checked the base and tips of the teeth for concentrically whilst fitted to the shafts, all good. However i did find some burring on the side of the mag sprocket teeth so clearly some wear evident. Have ordered two NOS sprockets from club spares...

Re: Tight spot magneto drive chain

Thanks for the advice Nev. I haven't got a lathe only a pillar drill which i think will have too much play in the shaft.

Club spares have NOS Mag and Cam sprockets so if the Mag and Cam shafts are true (will check tommorow) that only really leaves one or both of the sprockets.

Re: Tight spot magneto drive chain

Chris, No spare sprocket. I think I need to get the chain off and check the two sprockets for runout with the dial gauge mounted on the timing chest. I would expect to be able to see enough out of alignment for it to change the chain tension from 1/2" to fully tight but nothing obvious. Strange...

Re: Rattling noise from dynamo gear

There is no spacer/insulation between the dynamo body and the area it seats on the top of the Magneto. On mine the dynamo makes firm contact with the top of the magneto even before the strap is tightened. I don't think the two gears should need to bed in and as Nev says they are normally quite. The ...

Tight spot magneto drive chain

Gents I have just fitted a new Magneto chain to the WNG (endless from John Budgen) and find that there is a significant tight spot. Slackest point I have 1/2" of play and tightest no play. Odd thing is that the tight spot only occurs every one revolution of the sprockets i.e if I mark the top o...

Re: Chain case oil

I use ATF F type or G type which does not have any friction modifiers. In a dry clutch I don't think these additives matter but in a wet clutch (i.e my Triumph pre unit) apparently it does. I have had no 'slippage' issues on the Triumph with these types of ATF. My Triumph clutch has normal cork clut...

Interesting location of the oil filter. What type did you use filter housing and filter did you use?

Re: NG rim colour etc...

Paul,
As Dave says:

Have a look at the sales brochures 1946 and '47 on the main website. The Square, VH and NH all state chromium rims with painted centres. No mention of chromium rims for NG, VG or VB so this suggests they were painted black.

Cheers

Re: powdercoat disaster

John, I sprayed it using a spray gun. Thinned the paint down with their own thinners but you can use white spirit. However the Rustoleum does take ages to go touch dry and up to a week to fully go hard. It also produces quite a bit of overspray. It works for me but may not be for everyone. You can b...
