Re: Back numbers of Cheval

Quality is plenty good enough, and above all I appreciate the effort that is being put in to enable members access so many of our older Chevals.

Re: 500 single replacement std bore piston JP?

There is more BS about JP pistons than possibly any other Ariel part. JP are not a high expansion piston, rather they are high silicon and expand less than original Hepolites. I have carried out tests by measuring the size of pistons cold and then after heating in the oven. The JP expanded less than...

Re: Building up a shaft

Simes I feel for you. The worst part is that you have a nice finished part that cannot be a wall hanging, as you built the splines on an existing shaft. Otherwise it would have made a good wall hanging. Did you cut the splines with a HSS cutter. I tried a similar thing a while ago with a tungsten cu...

Re: Re-commissioning my '51 4G

Adrian Congratulations and I hope you enjoy it. My square is generally only used in the winter when it is a nice leg warmer, but in the summer the hot air off the engine onto the rider is most unpleasant. At the Highfields rally at each stop you could have fried an egg on the engine or oil tank of m...

Re: SQ4 Mk2 starting issues

Bernie My distributor was badly worn so I looked at other options. There are many electronic distributors from various cars that can be readily adapted to fit. There is a bit in the knowledgebase about using a Mitsubishi sigma distributor. I picked up a distributor from the wreckers (cant remember f...

Re: Armours fishtail exhaust

Most of the fishtail exhausts fitted to Velocettes that I am aware of have no baffles and are not too loud. Although the velo fishtail may be bigger which helps with noise reduction. And with twin mufflers I would not really expect a noise problem with little or no baffling. Another thing that may b...

Re: Telescopic Fork Geometry

Actually the pre 49 forks staunchions are 7 3/8' centres and the 49+ forks staunchions are 7 5/8" centres. however Ariel was not too accurate with their machining as it seems that a variation of 1/16" is common. I first found this problem when I attempted to fit an alloy top yoke to a 49+ ...

Re: Daily Fixing and Riding Diary on an Ariel 2020

I purchase the Smiths chronoelectric replacement for a chronometric. The one they advertise as being a direct replacement. It is also considerably bigger than the original and will not fit in the nacelle panel unless it is enlarged. After enlargement the speedo rim almost touches the ammeter and tou...
