Re: Square Four gearing

I think that the gearing is way too high. My mk2 is fitted with a 26 engine sprocket and I have also run with a 25. The 26 involves a bit of clutch slipping to take off up hill, two up and I would not want first gear any higher. The fitting of a 21 gearbox sprocket means the speedo will be incorrect...

Re: Squariel

The term Squaffer has also been around for a long time. I first saw that term in a Two Wheels magazine in the early 70s referring to a New Zealand built, Shorrock supercharged square four where the article was headed “Squaffer Supreme”. My father however, always referred to the square four as a Squa...

Re: Chain case oil

ATF was first recommended to me years ago for use in primary cases due to migration of oil to the clutch. I have used it ever since even though I now fit the club oil retainers to the clutch sprocket and that stops the oil getting into the clutch. ATF contains a lot of antiwear additives that cannot...

Re: Trying to identify this bike

Top yoke is 49 - 50, rear mudguard stays 49 possibly 50, front brake plate painted which is correct for 49 but chromed in 50 (unless subsequently painted) so for me it is a 49 VH.
edit. actually the rear mudguard stay/lifting handle is tubular so 50

Re: My "Trials " Bike

It does look like a nice bike. With regard to the gearbox, it is probably genuine HT. The HT Ariel (except for the first few produced which were fitted with a GB11) used the inner Ariel gearbox case and the outer cases from the AMC box. The AMC outer cases align with the holes in the Ariel inner cas...

Re: F cam reprofiling

John I believe that the followers may be forged as I am aware of a follower being successfully welded. Paul Below is a drawing of a twin lobe follower. The distance from the pivot point to the pushrod is 1 9/64 (1.14) whereas the distance from the pivot to the bearing part of the foot is 1 5/16”(1.3...

Re: F cam reprofiling

Worn followers are best recovered by being built up with stellite weld, preferably stellite no 1, although there are also other suitable hard facings available. Generally the follower should be harder than the cam.

Re: Twin leading shoe brake queries.

I have not had any problem turning brake shoes but was warned when I purchased the linings to wear full protective breathing gear. I asked do the linings contain asbestos and was informed no asbestos but that there were other materials in there that were just as dangerous as asbestos, and that appli...

Re: F cam reprofiling

The twin lobe cam follower when used on the single lobe cam, gives the same valve timing as the HS follower does. However the lift ratio of the twin lobe follower is .86 whereas the lift ratio of the HS follower is .92, so on the P2 cam the twin lobe follower will lift the valve .390” but the HS fol...

Re: brakes aka vincent

When the 2 hubs are pressed onto the sleeve it is important to get the spoke hole alignment correct. The holes in one side should align half way between the spoke holes on the other side.
