BA Mainshafts Interchangeability?

Quick question:

Are the early short splined mainshafts interchangeable with the later long splined ones? I know the clutch centres are different: the later one has the internal boss to cater for the long splines on the mainshaft, but apart from that, can I use either?

Having bought a '46 single-port VH engine from Dave Owen a couple of weeks ago, it prompted me to look at the carb on my existing '46 2-port VH Red Hunter. Great information here! Every time I've considered powder coating, I've always been put off by being told (by the powder coaters) that "there is no filler that can stand the powder coating temperatures".
