Re: seeking Rear suspension spring for Sq 4 MK II Plunger frame

Thanks Kevin, I did remove and examine an existing spring on my bike, and found that they are fully 1/2" shorter than the new spring from D'fly. I have decided in the interim to turn a 1/2" thick by 2" diameter aluminum spacer disk to install at the top of my old springs to bring ride...

Upward pointing Brake Arm vs downward pointing

There has been some discussion on the forum regarding issues with the downward pointing rear brake actuating arms of the early 50's vs. the change to upward arms on the later bikes, to eliminate the issue of possible servo-actuation of the brakes under certain hard braking conditions. My '53 Square ...

Brake lining thickness.. Square 4 Mk II

To avoid the 6 week turnaround from US to D'fly for REAR brake linings, I am taking my shoes down to a local shop tomorrow. Just wonder if anyone has specs for the actual width of a new lining? That would help, as the shop certainly won't have any knowledge of Ariels!

Re: Sq 4 MK II (Solex) Reluctant to cold start

Nope.. I do believe the bi-starter is functioning properly, and yes, pulling the knob all the way out after warmup definitely yields seriously adverse operation.

Good thought though!

seeking Rear suspension spring for Sq 4 MK II Plunger frame

I posted here previously regarding the low ride height of my '53, with photos of the plunger, and the general consensus was that my springs were tired, replacement with new ones recommended. At the time I placed an order on D'fly, their website showed "plenty in stock". However, after wait...

Re: Sq 4 MK II (Solex) Reluctant to cold start

Thanks Simon,
I'm going to go with your premise, and assume all will be well once the engine is broken in and spring arrives (next week for sure!)

Re: Sq 4 MK II (Solex) Reluctant to cold start

I am sticking with the non detergent oil during break in period, and I do have an oil filter. Spring is on the way so I will endure until I get about 1000 miles on the engine

Re: Sq 4 MK II (Solex) Reluctant to cold start

Hi Paul, Thanks for that suggestion. My notes re: jets that I observed when disassembling the carb: . 120 170 26 I WILL take a look at that gasket next time I have the carb off. However, I am inclined to agree with Chris's note regarding thick oil. I am still running 40 wt non-detergent, and, yes, t...
