Re: Mofified VH Head

Hi David, As you can probably tell I'm rather green when it comes to modifying engines; although I've taken them apart etc, I've always tended to think that the designers knew what they were doing and since everything is a compromise, theirs was the best going offsetting price, and performance for r...

Re: Oil Leaks - Singles

Hi John,
This looks as though it is likely more effective than a simple paper washer.

The challenge is, as I see it, that the spindle position varies in relation to the hole in the case, according to the position of the magneto adopted to acquire the correct chain tension.

Oil Leaks - Singles

Hi, I currently have the head off of my bike and want to use this as a chance to solve a few minor oil leaks. My question is 'where are the weak spots' on the iron head Ariel singles (NH & VH)? I fitted a Yamaha reed valve to the crankcase breather in lieu of the ball valve and on the timing cas...

Re: Mofified VH Head

Hi, Nev and David, thanks for your responses. Concerning the 'mofified' heads I am a bit uncomfortable about fitting head that has the larger diameter inlet valve. I looked at it in more detail yesterday and actually it has been bored out to 33mm. The inlet valve stem is shorter than a standard stem...

Mofified VH Head

Hi, the head on my VH (1950s) has been modified by it's previous owner and the inlet port bored out to 32mm. I acquired another head which has also been bored out to 32mm but in addition a larger dia inlet valve has also been fitted. Does anyone out there in the forum have any knowledge of this modi...

Re: Daily Fixing and Riding Diary on an Ariel 2020

Steve,
Amazing how she kept going; the valve must have been merrily flopping around!

Tough as nails those old Ariels!

I'm afraid I've not been out and about much this last week, what with one thing and another!

Yes,
they do develop personalities.

I'm told that I talk to Betsy, but of course I always deny it; yes, I've been accused of thinking more of the bike than her indoors!!!!

Thanks,
