Broken-up Magneto Drive Chain

Hi, I felt as though the timing on my VH was a bit retarded even on full advance, so today I decided to check it, and yes points were opening at about 1/4 inch BTDC on full advance (well approximately because sticking something through the plug hole is not that accurate, but based on the notches on ...

Re: Water in my gearbox Update

On closer inspection, I found that the rubber boot on the speedo cable is a poor fit (about 1/8" clearance) so it would not do its job of keeping the water out. The speedo cable on the 1951 NH has the same fault - both bought from the same supplier. Easily fixed by winding self amalgamating tap...

Re: Water in my gearbox

Hi all, In answer to Paul's question, yes I do have the conical cover on the speed drive cable at the point where it enters the box, and there is a tube protruding from the box , over which the cover slides. Concerning washing, I never use a pressure washer and seldom wash the bike - I tend to remov...

Water in my gearbox

Hi, I have just removed the kick start cover from the BA gearbox on my VH. Having placed a tray underneath to collect the grease (Penrite semi fluid) I noticed that, when it had settled there was some water in it that had risen to float on the top, which I can only imagine to be from condensation, s...

Re: Burman Grease Filled Box Clutch Mechanism

Hi, I have acquired said rubber boot and will be fitting a bush to the gearbox kickstart cover this weekend, since the whole affair is currently flopping around (although it still works). Well, after 60 odd years I flop around a bit as well!! Looking at the boot, I'm wondering how I can get it on......

Re: Daily Fixing and Riding Diary on an Ariel 2019

Steve, It must be bizarre swapping from a Yamaha to an Ariel and then to a combination and then to a.............. Still, if a wire broke or something with the Yamaha I guess it might not be so simple as a road side fix!! Safe riding. Keith PS. Got in over 100 miles on the VH over Easter........shee...

Re: Primary Chain Lubrication

Tape ordered! I did refill with oil, although it is said that plug is a bit high up the case and lets too much oil to be put in. This morning, there was a weep at the point around the fixing with the damaged thread. So, hopefully, the tape should fix it as a stop-gap. Long term, I guess it will need...

Re: Primary Chain Lubrication

Hi, It had never occurred to me that the needle rollers got their lubrication this way. I had always assumed that the grease used to hold them in place when assembling was sufficient, since they are actually only rotate when de-clutched, when in drive everything is fixed and rotates on the drive sha...

Primary Chain Lubrication

Hi, My primary chain case is leaking - one of the bottom threads is damaged. I was wondering, as an interim measure would it be alright to spray some of the squirty chain lube that I use on the rear chain onto the primary, or would that be a bad idea? I really would prefer to wait until winter befor...
