Re: solex carb sq4

Keith, I have just overhauled my 26AHD and, like you, found that the butterfly didn't close fully after reassembly. After taking it apart again I noticed that the butterfly has a chamfer around the edge and therefore can only be fitted one way up - this may be the issue with yours. Also the holes in...

Re: 4G conrod markings

Paul, The letter B is stamped into the web (not cast) and is on the left hand (roller bearing) side of all the rods. It would seem logical to mark the rods in this way to ensure correct re-assembly. The bearing caps are also marked (see photo). The crankshafts in this engine had clearly never been d...

4G conrod markings

I have carefully to labelled all the conrods in order to replace them exactly the same way round on each crank journal. There is a small letter B stamped into the web on the same side of each conrod (in relation to the engine orientation). Does anybody know whether this was something done by the fac...

Wanted - Rocker spindle for 4G

Hello all,

I am in need of a rocker spindle for a 1946 (iron) 4G. NOS would be nice (don't laugh at my optimism) but a decent used item would do the job. I have talked to Bruce Longman and searched through other sources to no avail.

Regards, Pete

Re: Galvanising 4G exhaust manifolds?

John, Nev, Thanks for your thoughts. The machine was bought from new by my dad in 1946 who ran it for about 8 years and then it was then parked in a shed and hasn't been touched since 1954. My father wasn't the sort of person to spend out on "embellishments" like chroming hence I am 99% su...

Galvanising 4G exhaust manifolds?

I am currently overhauling a 1946 4G that hasn't seen the light of day since the early 1950's. When I started wire brushing rust from the cast iron manifolds to my surprise shiny silver patches came up out of the dirt. On closer examination it appears that the manifold had at one time been plated (a...

Re: 4G - three-part rocker spindle

Brian Thanks for the warning. I have taken out all the valve guides today and, although a couple of the exhaust guides were chipped at the "hot" end, none of them showed signs of contact with the underside of the top cap. As far as I can ascertain there is only one type of valve guide for ...

Re: 4G - three-part rocker spindle

Paul Both the spindles (or should I say 1.5 spindles) came out very easily with only a light tug. The remaining short fractured parts were slightly more of an issue since there was no threaded end to which to attach a bolt. This was solved with a squirt of compressed air fed up the hollow centre of ...

4G - three-part rocker spindle

I've just stripped down the rocker box on my 1946 4G and find that the front rocker spindle is fractured in two places (see pictures). The fractures coincide with two of the rocker oil feed holes. Does anybody know if this is a common problem and, if so, should I be looking at finding replacements f...
