Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

OK,if thats a normal coil ignition system, the plate behind the points should be earthed, and if its able to rotate as an advance /retard,it must be continuously earthed.......so check the continuity there for a start.......a normal/ie not transistor system will have the negative terminal of the coil ...

Re: Big End

If the roller surfaces are not spalled,or failing ,then oversize rollers can be fitted to a caged bigend.....the 350 pin has tapers ,so is easy to dismantle without a press..........if you are careful ,you can even reassemble the bottom end without special equiptment..........when I was a kid I used...

Re: 3rd gear problems with BA gearbox

There is no backangle on the engaging teeth of these boxes,so applied torque doesnt pull and lock the gears into engagement like a Norton.Any weakness of springs ,or wear on the engaging surfaces is likely to compound and kick the gear out of engagement....never use a box thats jumping out of gear ....

Re: 3rd gear problems with BA gearbox

It may not make any difference, there may be enough overtravel to allow for one tooth on the cam gear.......the obvious way to test is to back off the detent spring in the case, and wind the curved quadrant back and forth ,checking if top gear is engaging fully, with a bit of overtravel ,or if the part...

Re: Layshaft bushes for 1st and 2nd gear 1951 CP

At a casual glance,it seems the layshaft bushes might be a smaller diameter than the splines adjacent, which would make them difficult to install......possibly why they are considered part of the layshaft......but I dont know...........I looked in my gearbox bits, and none of the bushes are tight in t...

Re: Layshaft bushes for 1st and 2nd gear 1951 CP

gearbox repairs dont come much simpler.........just press bushes onto the layshaft ,and turn them to fit the gears,........ using the centres in the shaft, what could be easier ?.......I notice in the army spec for the Matchless G3L,there is a "hard bronze" specified.......but check that yo...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

I wonder if there is some sort of primary resistance circuit in the setup,or coil, that has burned out,or shorted.......these resistors generally restrict coil current after a minutes running ,so that points dont burn......Sometimes built into a coil, sometimes ,external mounted on the coil, sometimes ...

Re: Which Bronze to use ?

BOC have always charged extortionate rentals here too,but last few years the buy yer own bottle scheme has hit the market, and now I get begging letters from BOC to entice me back ........I bought an oxygen cylinder for less than BOCs annual rental....Their gas prices are steep too, when I was in busi...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

As to air leaks, the spray will start and run a 6 cyl diesel with no carby ,and no fuel in the system.......so carby defects wont stop a motor running on spray........ A really flooded petrol motor wont start ,and generally needs to be cranked with the plugs out, which will blow out liquid fuel, then i...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

A coil ignition spark should be a strong fat blue white spark at crankover speed, any orange or red is a capacitance problem..........but having said that, spray will start a Villiers on a pump I have, where the spark is near invisible ,except in the dark, due to flywheel mag weakness........if the timi...
