The catch is if you use the low temp stuff on a casting ,and its unsatisfactory,you have "poisoned" the metal for any tig or mig welding ,as the zinc will continuously volatilize and blow the weld ....its also corrosion prone,and if some slag is included ,galvanic effect sets in and turns ...

I did a ally horse float for the guy I was working for some years ago,using a steel setup Mig ,no new liner or anything......just a spool of ally wire,and a cylinder of argon......it was ,IIRC ,a DueMig 205 /single phase,and the welds were on ally chequerplate about 4mm thick ........no problem with...

if the loose side link is tight on the pins ,there will be no flexing.....so regular replacement of the link with a new quality part will obviate the failures.....the problem with bicycle chain size is most of whats sold is cheap rubbish ,suitable only for kids bikes,and its quite difficult to obtai...

I'd say you ve done very well.....in Australia finding anything that isnt a pile of rusty mismatched broken bits is extremely difficult.........The tank,oil tank ,and wheels are all extremely hard to find here now......Ariel is the number one make for hoarders,and parts are rarely seen at swaps.

The forks look like they may be those suicidal 1970s screw in extensions to the normal stanchions......In any case ,shortening the forks is a simple cut and rethreading job.

I saw a doco on telly about a Bentley restorer......a customer brought in a wheel barrow load of miscellaneous bits ,handed over a cheque for a million quid,and twelve months later drove off in a Red Label Bentley......and ground the gears in the crash box .He could have chosen the autotrans option,...
