Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Thanks for the encouragement Simes.

The plugs look great. Perfect colour, everything perfect.

If I do remove the timing chain, I’ll lose my valve timing, right? That was another nightmare I wanted to avoid. It took me ages to get it right...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Hi Chaps, Opened up the rocker covers and everything is as it should be up there. Tappets and valve collets are all in their places. No, I can’t turn anything forwards or backwards. In any gear, either with the kick starter or trying to turn the rear wheel. I even tried pushing her back and forth in...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Opened up the inspection cover. Chain is there, tension correct. But without opening everything up can’t really see much. Thought also went through my mind if the nut for the engine shock absorber might have come loose. But can’t really see anything and If something like that had happened I would ha...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Also, if I really put all my weight to it (to the kick starter), I can actually make the clutch slip and move the kick starter a bit. That's why it seems to me the engine is caught somewhere, but really scratching my head now. No idea what to check next...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

I could never get mine to turn using the nut on the crank. Neither the front nor the rear crank nut. Funny enough I could using the camshaft nut, but now I’d have to take the oil pump out, which I would like to avoid if possible. The kick starter moves fine if I depress the clutch and the rear wheel...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Hi Simes, Thanks very much indeed. I gave you the measurements in mm but it should be cm of course. I do seem to have something wrong. The central bracket is then correct, and the front stand is attached like yours. However my front stand is shorter than yours - 34cm - and the front stays are longer...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

And today the first run down the road and back. Everything seems fine. Had to adjust the position of brake clutch levers on the handlebars as well as the lever for the gear change. The speedo is not working quite right, as if it’s a bit stuck - needle moves but snags and sometimes stays stuck in one...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Hello everyone, After fixing all the tidbits today I got the start procedure down and she is running lovely. 1. pull the bistarter out and turn the engine over with ignition off. 2. push bistarter in to mid position and ignition on. 3. she starts after the second or third kick. Everything seems to b...

Re: Hello all, New Member

Hello there and welcome! I‘ve just finished putting my 51 sq four back together from a basket case so fresh experience is at hand. And lots of others here who are gurus and help a lot. Definitely start by opening the engine and clearing the sludge traps and then post here any questions and we‘ll wal...
