Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Uhuuuuuu!!! She‘s running!!! Sorry for the poor video but not enough hands :) In the end it went like this: Tried Paul Jameson‘s trick and she fired, but didn‘t start. Re tried a few times and sometimes she would fire, sometimes not. I then closed the bistartet completely and opened up the throttle ...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Yes, valve timing according to Bruce Longmann's method and it was spot on to maybe 1 deg. I had to repeat it about 3 times before I got it, and did get confused as well at the beginning. Again,I believe it's something with the mixture because she ran twice for a few seconds before going out and didn...

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Gave up for today. Today she didn't fire once. After a few attempts the plugs are definitely wet. Still not sure why she is not strating. Too advanced? Too retarded? Too rich and flooding? I'll try Paul Jameson's method next time and re check the timing. Thanks for all the tips as always. Cheers Gui

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Hi Chris,
I don‘t think so. Triple checked the timing and all that, but I‘ll recheck if nothing else works. Anyway, if the timing was off 180deg, would she even fire up and run a few seconds?

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Got it :). There was a fibre washer already under there, but I added a second one just to try it out. The front stays measure about 29mm from the fastner‘s centres. Here‘s a pic of the front stand‘s attachment. However the angle of the mudguard is set by the center stay beween the fork legs isn‘t it?

Re: Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Thanks Simes, I'll try that. I had the air screw 3 turns out. I'll also try the washer under the float valve. Silly question, but how do you attach the washer under the float valve? The top of the float has a dimple where it pushes the small valve rod... I'm probably just missing the picture.... the ...

Square Four MkI restoration complete - almost....

Hi there everyone, I've finally finished rebuilding my Square Four from a basket case - only possible with a lot of help from all of you here in the forum. Many thanks for that! This weekend I did the first start attempt, and she starts briefly for a few seconds and goes out. It almost seems she flo...

Re: Sq4 rocker arm

On mine 4 rocker arms have a hole on top, just like Simes. The other 4 don't have any hole at all. I was also wondering about that.

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Hi Gui On my engine the the machined crank case mouth protrudes 1/8 In front of the cylinder block with a straight edge across the top of the rocker box a measurement can be made of the total height which should give you a good guide Pete Pete, I’m not sure if I understood you correctly, but mine s...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Thank you Pete,

The only thing I can confirm is the length of the push rods which are about the same. The other dimensions will help, but since my head is assembled at the moment I can't check the rest.
