Re: Mk1 Sq 4 BLOWING HEAD GASKET

Thanks Simes, it has been frustrating, but also learned a lot. It is indeed the most complicated bike I‘ve ever restored. In comparison my BSA Sloper or my early HD Sportster were a breeze. 20 years ago I restored a 54 Red Hunter which again was very straight forward. I should have known when I boug...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4 BLOWING HEAD GASKET

Well, she‘s blown again... The chirping was indeed the head gasket. The first few times it came up, I couldn‘t feel any blow by anywhere by holding my hand around the gasket area. But the last few rides it‘s now there. Blow by is coming at 9 o‘clock on cylinder 3. It‘s still very small, but it will ...

Re: Sq4 MkI timing case breather pipe

Hi John, I don‘t think I‘ve handled her with kid‘s gloves. The first few short rides, yes, as I was getting the first few heat cycles to settle down the head gaskets. After that I gradually pulled more rpms through the gears, and lately short periods up to higher speed, pulling up inclines etc. one ...

Ah. Thanks. Mine‘s a MkI.

Re: Sq4 MkI timing case breather pipe

No the built in relief valve in the oil pump. I have morgo oil gauge and it never goes over 65 lbs, due to the relief valve Oh. Didn‘t realize the pump itself had a relief valve. Can it be adjusted? Should it be adjusted? I just assembled the thing as it came... checked the clearance, opened the li...

Re: Sq4 MkI timing case breather pipe

Gui, just for interest sake where is the pressure relief valve located? On the front crankshaft, timing side. On the Sq4 there is an inspection plug screwed on to the engine case. Behind that you find the end of the front crankshaft and its nut. In the center of the shaft, there is a relief valve c...

Re: Sq4 MkI timing case breather pipe

Simes, I did install the Morgo with the recommended clearance, unless I measured something wrongly. Entirely possible of course. Although I didn‘t really understand how the clearance could affect the pressure? Dave, I suppose you mean the relief valve on the front crank? The parts are all new purcha...

Sq4 MkI timing case breather pipe

Here‘s another question for the experts. My Sq 4 now has just over 1000km since the rebuilt and except for the problems with the head gasket It is running very well. However, it still spews large amounts of oil through the timing case breather pipe. At first I thought it was due to everything being ...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4

Maybe loosen ALL the studs and then tighten them up again to the recommended torque. But I’ll let the more experienced members chime in, because I’m really not sure.

Re: Mk1 Sq 4

Hello T.J., I am going through the exact same thing as you, although I am already a bit further than you. I posted my last results on your previous thread just a few days ago. Perhaps you have read it and can we can compare notes. Anyway, I used this sheet for the torques (see 2nd page). I am not su...
