Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Thank you Pete,

The only thing I can confirm is the length of the push rods which are about the same. The other dimensions will help, but since my head is assembled at the moment I can't check the rest.

Square four distributer drive

Hello everyone,

Next question.
Should the dynamo housing with the worm gear that drives the distributor be packed with grase? Or lubricated in any way?
Cheers

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

John, That would be the proper way for sure, but I don't really have any way or the tools to measure exactly how much was take off. Anyway going with a max gap for late cams of 8 thou or about 0.2mm, and due to the fact that I have that on two or three valves already, what I'm missing can't be that ...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Hello again, First of all thank you all very much for the help and great suggestions in solving the problem. The help here in the forum is really invaluable to get these bikes back on the road. I will go with a base plate under the barrel. The advice from other friends with experience in restoring o...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

No, I’m still hoping for a solution to work with what I have I was thinking along the same lines as you, although using a metal shim is probably even better than just a thicker gasket on the barrel. The other possibility would be to use a second gasket, even if not an Otto, on the head. Or is this a...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Thanks as well Simes. That seems to confirm that my head is knackered. So, unless somebody has a head lying around that I could use, waht are the suggestions on how to solve this mess? The first thing I thought of was to make a thicker gasket for the base of the barrel, but not sure if there would b...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Hi Paul, Many thanks for the measurements. It furthers my suspicion that the former butcher, I mean owner, skimmed the head and/or barrel excessively. Let's see if Simes gets a similar figure as well. And no, I don't have any caps on the stems. BTW, I was able to trace a bit of history of my Square ...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

So, just did some measurements after getting home. The fins are a bit deformed as whoever disassembled the engine used some heavy leavers on the fins to get the head off. So I took the average of several measurements around the barrel and get about 3,25mm between the top barrel fin and the lower hea...

Re: Square four rebuild- next problem

Rule of nine is an old trick to set valve gaps on engines with multiple cylinders runing off one camshaft. If you look it up on Simes blog, he explains it beautifully. Basically one turns the engine until one valve is fully open - let's say the inlet on cyl 1. This means that the 3rd cam (hopefully ...
