Re: '58 SQ4 REBUILD

I have a '57 Mk II, and the tool box appears to be the same, apart from mine has no holes in it for switches etc. Looks like that one has been badly butchered (someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong). Most of the holes appear to be for light switch, ammeter etc, but on mine these items are mo...

There are quite a lot of horror stories of engines supposedly re built without having made sure the oilways etc are clear of sludge build ...

Re: Cleaning oil tank

Definitely petrol, and keep doing it with fresh petrol until you are completely satisfied there's no crap left in. When I did mine, I thought it was clean until I did another petrol wash, and heard something solid rattling about. It turned out to be a piece of semi solid crud loosened by the petrol....

Re: Leaky tank help needed

Whatever sealant you use, make sure it's compatible with ethanol which is used in modern fuel, otherwise it will quite quickly degrade and produce petrol tap blockage with the resultant sludge.

Re: SQ4 engine noise

Have you checked the primary chain tension? Sometimes the gearbox can move backwards slightly, if it isn't tightened enough, under the load from the rear wheel. That can cause the primary chain to become very tight, and cause a noise under acceleration. The gearbox mounting bolts both top and bottom...

Re: MkI square four engine rebuild

There's nothing too technical about the dynamo retaining pins. Just a piece of bar the right diameter will do. They are a very light fit in the "eye" bolts, and are held in place by tension of the retaining straps when they are tightened up.

Re: Ho Dear,Whats this for!

The part is listed as a cam collar, part no. 1961-49 I think it's just a spacer to stop the end cam from rubbing on the crankcase.
