Re: First time Ariel owner and new to the forum

Nice original bike, Dan. I think the seat/tank fit is an acquired taste. I believe the early 1954 seats were lower at the front but I've grown to prefer the 'flat top' seat look. However, I'd say fit whichever style you think looks (or works) best! (While you've got the chaincase inner exposed could...

Re: Clutch Plates

Sounds like you need to check that the pressure plate is pulling off evenly - with the dome off pull the clutch lever in and rotate the plate with the kickstart. Adjust individual spring-screws as necessary. If you think the clutch is tending to slip tighten all the springs up a turn or so. (I'm not...

Re: Daily Riding Diary on an Ariel

SDC11662.JPG Here's another picture of the Williams - and the legendary Henry Body (in the grey coat - it looks like Steve included the coat and trousers in his pic!), who at 80+ was still competing in sprints on the Douglas, exhibit 461. Looks like the ACU might have finally managed to ban Henry t...

Re: Halite washers - again

Halite is a mineral, hallite is gasket material.
Hallite was originally graphite-impregnated and shiny dark grey-black in colour.

Re: Clutch basket rubs on inside top of dome

Renold Canada is in Quebec (which might not be next door to you!) These guys in the UK will ship internationally, for the odd links that might not be too expensive http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p20038344/Renold-Blue-Box-08B-1-NO30-BS-Simplex-Chain-Link-and-a-Half-1/2-inch-Pitch/product_info.html ...

Re: Clutch basket rubs on inside top of dome

Those guys (Green Spark Plug Co) have recently expanded into things that aren't anything to do with spark plugs - eg classic motorbike parts! I spoke to them after finding that inexplicably - at the time - they were listed as a supplier of BSA A10 small-journal big-end shells. From what they said th...

Re: '57 Huntmaster - Sludge Trap

30 years ago detergent oils were already very common (and personally I wouldn't use anything else).
Take a cover off and see what it looks like inside, If it's clean inside you're OK, if there's a black oily covering and a build-up at the bottom, beware!
