That's a very nice solution. I think I need a lathe :¬)

I usually use champagne corks (any excuse) and give them a good smear of Vaseline. Seems to work ok.

Unless the coils have failed - and it sounds like they are ok - you should be able to get it sorted by patient adjustment. "Electrics for Duffers" on the voc site is great for getting the theory and http://www.worldphaco.net/uploads/REPAIRING_THE_STANDARD_RB106.pdf will give you the rest! ...

If someone has fitted a cut-out it might be worth checking/discarding that
And where the HT lead goes into the pickup is a common point of failure - often gets damp / loose / etc

Not sure if its possible with your carb but if you can rig up a clear tube to allow sighting of the actual fuel level it might help - http://www.model-a.org/fuel_sight_tube.html
