That's a very nice solution. I think I need a lathe :¬)

I usually use champagne corks (any excuse) and give them a good smear of Vaseline. Seems to work ok.

Unless the coils have failed - and it sounds like they are ok - you should be able to get it sorted by patient adjustment. "Electrics for Duffers" on the voc site is great for getting the theory and will give you the rest! ...

If someone has fitted a cut-out it might be worth checking/discarding that
And where the HT lead goes into the pickup is a common point of failure - often gets damp / loose / etc

Not sure if its possible with your carb but if you can rig up a clear tube to allow sighting of the actual fuel level it might help -
