They are usually set at full advance with the cable slack so that pulling the cable retards the ignition. Having said that some mags may be wrong handed or a previous owner may have timed it with the cable tight so pulling it over advances the timing. Best to check it is set correct, doesn't take lo...

Might be worth giving it a quick de-coke.
My old VB used to pink. When I lifted the head I discovered someone had welded up a crack but hadn't smoothed it off very well thus creating a hot-spot.

Its a long long time since I had my '55 FH but I'm fairly sure the oil cap had a vent. And if all else fails with the mag just lock it somewhere near full advance. Kick starting will be an adventure but once on the move I never retarded it.
