A very, very, fine tribute indeed to the interchangeability of Ariel parts.

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Chris, I am delighted at your progress. The problem always did sound like fuel starvation. Solex adjustments are not too easy or too obvious. Jens Beusse and Otto Mederle, both from Germany, are the serious experts on these carbs. Apart from anything else, they know which parts should be fitted - an...

Re: 4G exhaust manifolds

The thin wall one looks correct to me. I wonder if the thick wall one has been cast using the pattern for the alloy versions of these manifolds, as used in 1948. I doubt it will make much difference, unless you go racing.

Picking up on your wife's point and given that you have just re-timed everything, are you sure that you have timed on the compression stroke rather than the exhaust stroke?

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

Hello Chris, Following your description of the coil conversion, plus the photo you posted earlier, I think it unlikely that this is the cause of the problem. You are consistent in saying that you have a spark. If we exclude jets of the wrong size, or jets fitted in the wrong places (it can be done b...

Re: 1948 Iron 4G Coil Ignition

So Chris, you "always have to use the bi-starter". Do you mean starting from cold, or do you also have to use it when starting from warm? If it is neede when starting from warm, you must be running very lean. Please clarify so that we can move onwards. Look at the edge of your old rotor ar...

Re: 1938 square foue Magneto sprocket

You need two things. First, the sprocket taper should easily bind on the shaft taper. If it doesn't, apply fine grinding paste and grind in to improve the fit but make sure you remove all traces afterwards. Second, the nut must run down the thread on the shaft freely. If it binds, it will move the s...
