THE SQUARE 4 LIVES - BUT NOT THE DYNAMO

At last I've fired up the square 4 - over 50 years since it was last ran. Sounds great but no life from the regulator or dynamo. Im not sure which wire is the field and which is the dynamo when looking at the dynamo body from the front. Im assuming its F to the left and D to the right...am I wrong a...

sqare 4 relining....godden engineering Kent

Dear all on my last topic on relining a square 4 barrel I had a few bits of advice which I was very greatful for. I took the plunge and took the barrel to Godden Engineering in East Malling Kent. They advised that the barrel would need a new liner due the crack on the sleeve base. They did a great j...

simes sounds a bit worrying, I would not like to fit them for the reasons above. Would it not be possible to machine the piston grooves by putting them in a lathe ? Of course any later ring fit would mean getting the two types of ring again. I assume these are hepolite pistons (thorntons supplied me...

Re: Lucas C35SD Dynamo

Simon my 51 model had a dirty kind of dark grey on the cap - I assume originally black but it faded over the years. With the shortages in the chromium department due to the korean war I would not think this was meant to be plated for this period. I must admit though I got mine chrome plated on my co...

Re: square 4 sprung cam followers????

thanks David I agree its to stop excess clatter but these were in a second hand barrel I bought so I dont know what cam they were married up to in the past. I noted since posting this topic that the cast iron square 4s had seperate end caps on their tappets - perhaps on the change oveer to alloy hea...

square 4 sprung cam followers????

anyone know or heard of this. I have a square 4 mk 1 barrel and have removed the followers (after much persuasion, wd40 plus blow tourch) The odd thing is once removed the followers are shorter then norm, and still stuck up the guides are sprung loaded cup ends - which are still stuck. I have not se...

Re: square 4 liners - are they easy to fit

Well - I have taken it to a few engineers and most have said they would replace the liner as it looks like it may break off. I went to Godden engineering at West Malling (vincent specialists) and they reckon it wont be a problem to replace. I will let you know how I got on as the more competent engi...

Re: square 4 liners - are they easy to fit

Thanks all for the replies. I had another look today and what I have is a hairline crack at the bottom of the liner going upwards for about an inch where it appears to then turn and follow the base of the alloy for about another 3/4 of an inch. Really annoying!!. I will give it some thought about ca...

square 4 liners - are they easy to fit

I just got my 1951 engine back from the slowest reborers from hell (he took 6 months!!!) On looking at the bores I have noticed a hair line crack on one of the liners at the bottom (where the liner is exposed) I assume the metal has fatigued or matey has been heavy handed with it in the workshop, ho...
