Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

A bit late today, the good weather waylaid me a bit! Today's pages have the 1933 Olympia show reports and a lot of interest in the new fangled Ariel rubber handlebar mounts and how they provide protection from vibration. I guess the test riders hadn't worn them out to such an extent that the handleb...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

Sorry about not posting yesterday - I was waylaid by the arrival of a chainguard I'd had made for the OG 250 and then one thing led to another as it does and soon the whole day had passed in the garage... Johnny: the paraffin reminds me of when I restored a 1914 New Hudson two stroke which literally...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

Thanks Johnny and likewise I hope you're keeping well in these bizarre times. Today's offering is a mixture. I've delved into the July to December volume of The Motor Cycle and also the 1907 volume of the same. It's interesting that, as Adrie pointed out 'The Motor Cycle' has very few articles or ev...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

Thanks Johnny, I'm glad you're enjoying them as much as I do. Today's bring us to the end of this particular volume and includes an article on a scramble won by a rider in a 250 Ariel! I've been reading through a volume from 1907. Not many mentions of Ariels but I'll post what I've found tomorrow an...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

Today's 'Workshop Wisdom' from 1932 showing not just the ingenuity of some owners but also the things they'd put up with when it came to what must have been nearly new bikes. For example the Square Four which had oil getting into the distributor must have been about a year old....... Image (100).jpg...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

So today's offering spans the change from the regular section on 'Notions, Novelties and News' to one titled 'Workshop Wisdom'. In reality I think it was the same as before with just a change in title. I've also been looking through volume number one of 'Motor Cycling' from February 12th to August 6...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

Thanks John for the fascinating letter from Ken Sprayson, I knew none of that and I enjoyed reading it. I noticed he mentioned the BSA ascent of Snowdon in 1924. Some time ago I bought a 1913 BSA sidecar which had been derelict for a very long time. In the sidecar pocket was a very grubby postcard i...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

Thanks Johnny, some of the tips are useful and others plain weird but I think they all give us an insight into how people were trying to keep their bikes running in 1932 when the depression in the UK was having a massive impact on people's finances. So, here's some more for today including an articl...

Re: Ariel in Motor Cycling 1930/31

And today's offering including a bit about frame building and how to ease clutch adjustment on the 1931 models with the judicious use of a tax disc holder (you'll see what I mean....)
