1938 ARIEL SQUARE FOUR SPEEDO FITTING

Could someone please help with the following question ---- Should there be a rubber gasket between the speedo and the chrome panel, as looking under the speedo outer body flange is a small formed channel that looks like it is there to take a gasket.?

FITTING SQUARE FOUR ENGINE INTO FRAME

What is the best approach to fitting the heavy engine into the frame without scratching the new paint. As a fully assembled engine is very heavy I have built it up as far as just block and crankcase with a view to assembling the rest (ie head, primary case, mag, etc.)when I get it fitted into frame....

I have just assembled newly ground crankshafts into the crankcase which has had fitted new main roller bearings and new main plain bearings, presently the end float is zero and I therefore need to fit shims, does anyone know what the correct end float on the cranks should be ?

What type of Plating finish should there be on (1)--The Strap that holds the magneto in position, (2)--- The small diameter oil feed pipes from the crank case to the rocker box and (3)---The rocker box lid special nuts---they all dirty and old look and like unpolished chrome but are they supposed to...

PA SPEEDOMETER (1938 square 4)

Does anyone have a drawing or the dimensions, (or a spare they can sell me) of the small 'Millage Trip Operating Lever' for my PA speedo as mine had a non standard small strip of metal soldered on to the little operating spindle to make it work.

Re: PA SPEEDOMETER (1938 square 4)

Thank you again Paul for you help--I have nearly finished the refurbishment of my PA Speedo, I just have to make a operating lever when I can get hold of the dimensions, my father must of lost the original as at some time he had soldered on a short piece of flat metal strip. Thanks once again, Regar...

Re: THIS MAY BE HELPFULL

Hi Simon, First I got all the dirt and oil off the barrel with 'Frost's' 'Cleaner de-greaser' (used to be called marine clean but it's the same stuff)---I scraped and wire brushed all loose rust off it, gave it a final wash down with 'Panel wipe' Then gave it 3 coats of 'Rustolium' black silk finish...

THIS MAY BE HELPFULL

In restoring 1938 square four, which I am hoping to finish this year, I have had a lot of really great help from the Forum and thought I would pass on a few things that I have found which has been a great help in the restoration. Painting the Barrel--I used Rustoleum Satin black arosol--ref-77157778...
