Re: Simes' FH Rebuild

Only the large journal crank has the inner sleeve, you have to scrape out all the hardened sludge in the trap, and really need to remove the plugs at both ends to do this successfully.

Re: MO1 Magneto Question:

As you suggest, I used the other holes as a guide to the depth, and then subtracted a little (I think around an 1/8") to be on the safe side. You will not be able to thread right to the bottom of the hole unless you use a plug tap (after a first tap) with the end ground to expose the full cutti...

Re: MO1 Magneto Question:

The 4 pegs on a Magdyno magneto are usually a BSA single fitting, if you can remove them the holes are small enough (if undamaged) to tap out to 3/8" BSW. the usual size when threaded . However, for an Ariel application, there needs to be a central hole for best usage, the magneto can be (caref...

Re: Front Forks Mk 1 Square Four

When I fitted the Eddie Dow type damping assembly, which I think the Paul Goff kit is based on, it was in a set of the pre 56 forks. Rather than make new top nuts, if you turn up a plug for the nut that is an interference fit (and use some loctite as an added safety feature), the tie rods can be scr...

Re: Huntmaster Crankshaft

In the past, I have turned the ends of the longer conrod bolts to shorten them to the same length as the originals, so that there is not any protruding thread. At the time, I was concerned that the longer bolts might hit the bolt securing the oil return pipe in the sump, although I did not check thi...

Re: Huntmaster Crankshaft

Small journal conrods are part number 67-270, I think large journal conrods are 67-1160.

Re: Simes' FH Rebuild

I have found that with a small journal crank and the thinner barrel flange on a Huntmaster, a combination of the 67-356 rocket cam and 7.25cr flat top pistons give the best combination of performance, tractability and reliability. An oil filter is a must, the sludge trap in the small journal crank i...

Re: kh dynamo

It should be the 24 tooth gear for a KH, I recently fitted one for a friend who had a 23 tooth gear on his 1957 KH dynamo, which showed an uneven wear pattern. The correct gear has a step at the back to align the gear with the driving pinion (much the same as a Triumph dynamo gear, although this has...

Re: 350 crankshaft

Yes it can, years ago I brought a NH crank from a breakers yard that had the same fault. On dismantling the crank, the crankpin was the wrong way round, but there was no apparent wear on the bearing. I presumed the piston seized up due to lack of oil thrown from the bigend, and the bike was then scr...

Re: Telescopic Fork Geometry

For the first few years of the telescopic forks (1948-50 approx), the fork legs are closer together than in the 1950 onwards models, so it is not possible to mix and match the top and bottom yokes. I think there were four different types of top yokes (not including competition models), a steel narro...
