This could be a faulty ammeter or possibly one of the spade connectors touching the headlamp shell?

As I understand it, for the ammeter to melt it would suggest a short circuit from somewhere in the ammeter to the frame (headlamp shell).

Thanks all for your comments. I have fitted one washer with a tongue and have another to fit on the outside. It makes sense that when the inner is secured that it will take out much of the movement. I just couldn't remember whether this looked right and just wanted to check before I push hard on the...

I'm reassembling the primary drive and wonder whether it's normal for the clutch outer to be able to move in and out so far?
