Re: electric start leaders

Hello Philip, Roger Lee owns the Leader with the electric start, I looked at it a couple of years or so ago and as far as I can remember the starter motor sits under the cylinders behind the exhaust pipes and operates via a one way clutch to drive the main shaft on the off side. There may be some on...

Re: MK 2 Ariel Leader

Hi, I decided to go to Stafford on the MK 2 Leader , even though it had only 150 miles on the clock, done mostly in small journeys. It got there and back OK , I kept the speed down to 45 mph and the only thing I noticed was the mpg which was a bit low at 50 -ish . I've altered the carb settings and ...

Re: A Strange Thing !

Hi,

The bike looks well made and the Ariel engine seems to fit in well and not look out of place. I wonder what size of sprocket it has on the rear wheel.

Re: leader rectifier

Hello, It's usual for the negative terminal to be diagonally opposite the positive one , on the square rectifiers. The one Roger has on his Arrow tends to bear this out. It is possible to used a continuity tester on a multimeter to compare the terminals on the unknown rectifier with a know one, if y...

Re: Piston identification

Hello Derek, The piston looks as though it has been filed to alter the inlet timing. Some tuners alter the piston rather than file away the inlet port in the spigot and crankcase. The top also looks as though it has been lowered to line up with a larger transfer port. The pistons do vary in weight q...

Re: wiring diagram

Hello Phil, Attached the Leader diagram, it has the flasher circuits and extra stop light but is near enough the same. Also the wiring for the Boyer Power box ( 12 volts ), it shows how the alternator wires are connected to give extra output. The coils are 6 v but connected in series to use with the...

Re: Primary chain lubrication.

Hi Roger, I might change that weather summary , it's gone cold again. I like the twin headlights and the mirrors on the Arrow, they have given me an idea for the MK 2. I seem to have spent a lot of time on the taps so the 'injector' has not progressed as much as I would have liked but I'm getting be...

Re: Primary chain lubrication.

Hi Colin, Someone else used Villiers Services and they were pleased at the improvement to their Arrow clutch. They seemed to have made a good job but they don't advertise them for the Leader or Arrows. They say the plates are used on trial bikes. The cost was about £ 45-00 including postage for the ...

Re: Primary chain lubrication.

Hello, I tried two different types of clutch plate linings, both full circle types and both of them caused clutch drag even with the minimum amount of free play. I tried the Villiers Services linings and it worked OK but the linings are a bit thicker so as mentioned before used an original plate to ...

Re: Primary chain lubrication.

Hello, I use 20 grade oil in the primary chaincase and it works OK, even with a load of camping gear on the Leader. As Roger suggests , check the adjustment. It is possible to adjust the pressure of the clutch by mean of the washers in the spring cup assembly. See diagram in manual. I find with the ...
