Must admit that I don't know of a way of checking magnetos, might he best done by an expert. Welcome to the forum, what part of the world are you from? I'm guessing that your mag might have packed up, although you can see a spark, under compression It can dissapear. You should though check the timing hasn't moved out of place. When you first fired up the bike the compression might have been...

National Motorcycle Museum

I'm working in Burton on Trent tomorrow and will pop into the National motorcycle museum on my way home, if anyone would like any pictures taken of an Ariel to help your restoration just let me know.
