Re: Square Four Wet-Sumping

I no longer have a Square Four and mine pre-dated Morgo pumps - it had the Mazak (Monkey Metal) gear pump. It sounds as though you are getting a build-up of oil in the rocker boxes - which then drains down when the motor stops. There are two small-diameter oil pipes heading upwards - one for the roc...

Re: VB600 top speed?

I once had an indicated 73mph on my 1957 VB - flat on the tank heading for the Severn Bridge (with a following wind) and my thumb jammed between the bar and the advance lever :o .

No wonder it used to shed bits along the road.

Well, I was only 23 at the time  .

Re: side stand identification

The one on the right looks very like that on the 1953 MkI Square Four (Coronation Model) that I had back in 1968 - '73. It was a short stumpy thing with an extended foot. It was so close to the centre line of the bike that the force exerted on it was huge and it would sink into the tarmac on a warm ...

I think The Club should appoint a Scrutineer . . . To be stationed a short walk from Steve's house  .

Any nominations :?: :?: :?:

Re: Petrol tank adaptor 1956 NH

Is the insert made of brass ? If it is seriously tight, heat the tank and use one of those Plumbers' pipe freezing sprays on the brass to shrink it. If that doesn't work I'd turn-up a brass bolt, thread it in and solder the head to the insert - then use a (six-point) socket and bar in the time-honou...

Re: Single Crankcase Repair?

I have had good results using 'Lumiweld' low-temp alloy 'weld' material (not for a repair this large though). I would at least give it a try, with a stainless steel band around the protruding casting into which to melt the Lumiweld. It melts at around 360 deg C. Then machine it back to size. Its a b...

Re: Leaking Fuel Tap

The corks in the taps dry-out in storage - and leak.

Strip the tap, remove the cork and boil it in water (briefly). It will swell and become soft. It shouldn't leak after that.

Of course, if its been soaking in petrol for months I'm afraid there is a different problem  .

Re: Decided to sell my 1956 Mk2....

I love that water pump - it should be steam-driven  .

Can I assume there's a noisy Sunbeam S7 out there somewhere :? .

Dai, That's very interesting, can you provide an explanation (it appears to be quite fresh) ?
