Re: Sleeving and piston fit for a VB

Hi, I had a '31 Panther 500 barrel sleeved by: T&L Engineering (Bedford) Ltd. Pear Tree Farm, Wilstead Road, Elstow, Beds, MK42 9YG. Tel: 01234 352418 They did a good job but as the bike restoration is still 'work in progress' I can't claim that it works ! This was back in June 2014 so the Co. m...

Re: Squre Four Engine Breather

I fitted a copper pipe to the inside of the breather on my 4G, with a soldered tab mounted on the upper oil pump stud. This was to prevent oil that was running down the walls from being blown out. After a long run there was a surprising amount of vapour wafting out of the breather - and I had new sl...

Re: Ariel bikes for auction

That looks a bit sad, how much of that stuff came from relatives clearing out the deceased's unfinished projects ? Hands up those who DO NOT have boxes of parts that are precious to us but would just be junk to our relatives ! That Triumph Tiger 80 . . . . Oh Yes Please 8-) . I'd love another square...

Re: Solex AHD26 carb jets

On the couple of occasions my Square four let me down (once on a Motorway in Holland) the cause was a blockage in that 'air jet'. Road dust/dirt can get into it. I used to do high mileages and probably didn't pay it enough attention. Just bear that in mind if a mysterious fault brings you to a halt ...

Re: Mk1 Sq 4 Carb

Just a thought . . . It is possible to 'cast' Lumiweld into a hole with the male thread in place. The result is supposed to be harder than the original despite having a relatively low melting point (c. 350 deg C). You would need a piece of stainless solid round bar with the correct (presumably BSP P...

Re: plunger grease drilling

I remember doing the same when I restored my Square Four (back in 1968) - I removed the alloy plug and drilled through the bushes so that the grease could reach both bushes.

I'd say you did the right thing.

Aren't canal boat engines normally diesels

Semi-Diesels (Hot Bulb Engines) - e.g. the Bolinder single cylinder.

Nowadays they are modern diesels of course ;) .

Re: Ldr, virtual rally

I was planning on trundling the 'VH' down to Cornwall (from Edinburgh) this year. Well, I'll hopefully have the opportunity to run-in its new piston and gain confidence in the Electronic Ignition before next year. DSCN8702.JPG Question: Will the route for 2021 be the one that has been issued (or nee...
