Re:

It was last on the road about 4 years ago. I'm doing some maintenance on it today - fingers crossed the old girl will be fired up and running soon! Do be careful. If the oil is at all old and black I wouldn't start it until the sludge traps in the crankshafts have been cleaned out. When I had one I...

Re:

There is still some air bubbles running thru but I think that will clear. Air bubbles are normal, once the scavenge pump has cleared the accumulated oil in the crankcase. The scavenge pump is larger than the feed pump, therefore it clears everything from the crankcase and then pumps an air and oil ...

Re:

Bob - I've a BMW 1150 boxer too - I renewed the sight window a few months ago but it's still nigh on impossible to actually SEE the oil level... Strange, I have no problems with my '04 1150 GS Adventure. The sight glass on my K1200GT was difficult to see because it was tucked away in the dark behin...

Re:

My choice was along the lines of 'pinning the tail on the Donkey'. I looked at those who advertise in Old Bike Mart, then looked at their web sites. "The Magneto Guys" looked suitable so I contacted them by e-mail.

I'll let you know how they perform (in my view).

  . . My neighbour, Mike, suggested that I do that with the Panther 8-) .

Well, my BMW 1150 Boxer has a Perspex oil level sight glass so why not :D .

Re:

BUT how will those slippery wheels pull the oil up over the weir in the left part of your top picture! MikeN. Yes, I had thought about that :? . I'm guessing (hoping) that straight 50 will stick to the wheels - otherwise it will be wet sumping until the conrod chucks it over the wall. I'm not sure ...

Re: Ooooooh Look !

Get the VH over 70 Bob and it will polish its own crank. :D   I saw that you were on-line, so was expecting some comment ;) . I think Mr Warne put a cast iron bottom-end into the VH (I saw a steel assembly sitting on his workbench), so maybe it could do with some professional attention 8-...

Ooooooh Look !

OK, I know its not an Ariel part but I thought I'd share this moment. I am in the process of restoring a 1931 P&M Panther 500 (M50) from an incomplete heap of rusty parts. It was stripped in 1954 and the bits left in a barn  . When I stripped the motor it was full of crud and bronze filin...

Re: Welding Old Alloy

Would you be without any of them? No, of course not, I'm lucky in that I have been able to afford to provide for my family and also indulge some of my hobbies. I just bought a 2001, 4.2 litre Toyota Landcruiser 'Amazon' to (possibly) replace my 1998, 3.0 litre Toyota Landcruiser 'Colorado' that is ...

Re:

Who is restoring you magnetos bob? I started with a tatty old incomplete BTH M1. F2 with a damaged case. I then bought a similar one at the Bristol Classic Show in Feb. Apart from missing bits, the cases had been damaged (mountings 'adjusted' with a hacksaw). I was therefore needing more than just ...
