Re: speedometer type

Hi Chris,
According to Roy Bacon's book, 1948 was the year all Ariels went chronometric. My 46 Sq4 has a PA.

Re: Hello all, New Member

Welcome to the Forum! I think the best reference book for Ariel (and other makes) repair and maintenance is Nicholson's Modern Motorcycle Mechanics.

Your bike looks good - don't get discouraged, it is going to start eventually. You don't have your timing set 180° out do you?

This is a photo of the oiler from my Sq4. I think yours should be similar. I agree that blocking off the hole and using a modern chain lube product is a good idea.

Re: Can you help me identify this speedo

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the Forum. You had better send a prayer of thanks up to your late father. That speedo is rare and highly sought after i.e. worth a lot of money.

Paul,
That 40 weight oil should be O.K. for 50°F temperature. To eliminate the oil as a cause of your problem why not change what you have in there for some synthetic 15W-50? What lubricants are you using in the primary case and gearbox?

Re: Sq 4 MK II (Solex) Reluctant to cold start

Also, because when hot, the carburetor drips a bit of fuel if left on the side stand, I have taken to always storing her on the center stand, and running the fuel bowl dry at idle upon shutdown. Hello Paul, What happens if you leave the float bowl full? There should be no leakage if the bike is on ...

I've used Nicholson's specs of between .002" and .004" with no apparent problems on my Sq4.

Re: Wheel spokes advice required again....

Hi Alan, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. My bad experience with Central Wheel/Draganfly dates from around 16 years ago s...
