What is the oil level in your primary case?

Re: Square Four MkI - first rides after restoration

I have a Thorspark ignition kit. Anybody using one on a Square Four? If so what is the best way to check the timing with a strobe light? What does one use to put some marks and check? I was thinking of using the front crankshaft, by unscrewing the inspection cap and putting some marks on the nut. H...

Re: MORGO PUMPS

£200 is a mere drop in the bucket of expenses needed to put a Sq4 together. I think the peace of mind from improved oiling is worth it.

Re: Shock absorber knocking

Hi Cam, I agree with John - I too think you should get on that bike and ride it. You mentioned using 40 weight oil - why not 50? Did you use running-in oil to seat the rings? My Sq4 could emit clouds of smoke right after its refurbishment but after a few hundred miles there was no trace of smoke. Re...

Re: Returned from Australia

I think it has to do a bit with the mindset of Australians. That is the only country where I was strip searched before being allowed in and I've been to many countries!

Re: Side stand for NH

I don't trust the sidestands on any of my Ariels. The rear stands are almost always the ones I use.

Re: NH Magneto Sprocket

You have cleaned the shaft and interior of the sprocket with acetone or similar to remove all traces of oil?

Re: speedometer type

Hi Chris,
According to Roy Bacon's book, 1948 was the year all Ariels went chronometric. My 46 Sq4 has a PA.

Re: Hello all, New Member

Welcome to the Forum! I think the best reference book for Ariel (and other makes) repair and maintenance is Nicholson's Modern Motorcycle Mechanics.

Hello Gui,
Your bike looks good - don't get discouraged, it is going to start eventually. You don't have your timing set 180° out do you?
