Re: Missfire

Hello Andy, When my 51 VH exhibits those symptoms I replace the spark plug with a new one, gapped to 15 thou, and that usually solves the problem. I don't claim to be an expert on old bikes and their foibles but J.B.Nicholson sure was and this is what he has to say, in Modern Motorcycle Mechanics 7t...

Hello Mark, On the BA box of my 1946 Sq4 I had machined a groove near the outside end of the kickstart shaft to take an o-ring. There is plenty of "meat" on the shaft for this and the o-ring keeps the oil or grease in the box. There is no detectable restriction of the kickstart movement. A...

Re: Square Four Big Ends

Hello Simon, I very much agree with the suggestion that you install some new club con rods but if you are intent on re-using what you have you might want to check out a thin walled, 14mm, 3/8ths drive socket which is available from any good tool supplier. I'm not sure if it would fit the nuts you ar...

Re: Loctite

Hello John, I forgot to mention in my first message that although there is no need to wait to assemble parts there is a need to wait until the Loctite has cured before subjecting it to oil. If you are not using primer, wait at least 24 hours and even longer if your working area is not heated up to r...

Re: Loctite

Hi John, You can use Loctite 510 with or without a gasket. If used with a gasket put a bead of Loctite on both sides of the gasket. Parts should be clean and dry. It fills gaps up to .010" without primer and up to .020" with primer. In my experience Loctite is far superior to Wellseal in t...

Re: Rocker feed stud

Hello Michael, There is enough room for a Helicoil and that way you can keep the original stud and banjo. If I had to do that job again I would remove the case from the bike to make it easier to work on. Whether you tap the hole for a new stud or a helicoil make sure your tap is perpendicular to the...

Re: Gearbox Removal from S/A Single

Hello Andy, Just a month or so ago I succeeded in removing and then replacing the gearbox of my 46 Sq4 without disturbing the motor or the rear mudguard. I did loosen the the right rear engine plate. Of course, on a single, with the mag platform, one can't loosen the plate very much but, after looki...

Re: BA Gearbox stuck in 3rd gear

Hello Brenton, Thank you very much for asking about that gearbox problem. I am pretty well certain it has been solved although I'll have to wait until I put some miles on it in the Spring to be absolutely sure. At the same time I posed the question to this Forum I also ran it by the AOMCC e-mail cha...

For Sale: 1951 VH

My 1951 VH is for sale due to lack of use. Although it is in far from perfect condition it is a good runner. The GB gearbox and paint colour make it resemble a 1953 model. Price is $4,700 (either US or Canadian currency). I could deliver it in the north-eatern US or eastern Canada. For more photos o...

BA Gearbox stuck in 3rd gear

Since the end of a very long rebuild of my 1946 Square Four a few years ago I've only put about 500 miles on it and hadn't had any problems with the BA gearbox except for a broken kickstart spring. After the installation of four new AOMCC con rods this past winter I've been riding the bike at higher...
