Re: A corner for VBs (and other sidevalves)

VB VALVE LIFT Thought you might like to see a polar graph of the actual lift as measured on my VB. The picture's a bit cropped; the lefthand line is the inlet and the right the exhaust. (Sorry it's a bit freehand!) VB valve timing and lift.jpg The lift is measured in millimetres peaking at about 8mm...

Re: A corner for VBs (and other sidevalves)

Bob,
If you go up this thread to the 17th of September you'll see the measurements of my alloy head VB for the clearance between head and piston. Its much more than yours with the piston being some 50 thou below the cylinder top. But I've no idea why!

Re: A corner for VBs (and other sidevalves)

Thank you gentlemen! To Nev; I see my exhaust valve is shiny and non-magnetic. Stainless steel do you think? (The inlet's magnetic.) Currently my valve clearances are 0.001 inch up on the recommended inlet 0.003 and exhaust 0.006 for settling in purposes. What extra clearance would you recommend for...

Re: Fitting new valves and guides

Mr Mattina, may I encourage you to take heart? Grinding the valve stems in the guides isn't the way to do it but the stems and guides are tough and if you clean them out well you'll get away with it. When you bike was old and out of fashion in the late 1960s/1970s I expect much worse was done to it ...

Re: Nut thread for g'box pivot bolt on swinging arm frame

Thank you gents.
It's the smaller thread through the primary chaincase that's 5/16th of an inch in diameter that I want. I'll take it as a BSC pattern then.

Nut thread for g'box pivot bolt on swinging arm frame

Dear all, The nut on my '56 frame gearbox pivot bolt has made a bid for freedom. I'm fairly sure it has a cycle thread but what little thread that is protruding the primary chaincase is a bit too short for me to have confidence in my check with a tap and die. Am I right in thinking the thread is 5/1...

Re: A corner for VBs (and other sidevalves)

TIMING DISC If you can't find your grandad's old Castrol disc (given away free, I think in the 1970s) then print this off https://www.mmoc.org.uk/MessageBoard/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=65711&p=596679&hilit=timing+disc#p596679 and then laminate it. I'm sure Declan Burns and the Morris Owners Cl...

Re: A corner for VBs (and other sidevalves)

TIMING THE VALVES ON A VB Greetings Comrades! From experience I've found that the "official" valve timing in the manuals is often not what you get in practice on old vehicles so I thought I'd check what I my VB actually had. With the engine coming together I can't get at the crankshaft so ...

Re: UK coins as rust proof washers

Yes Dave, I wondered about that too. I certainly didn’t fancy being dragged to the Tower and hung, drawn and quartered with my head stuck on a spike on London Bridge. So being an old civil servant I thought I’d call in a favour or two and check with Her Majesty. I explained what I was up to, how I s...
