I started it a couple of weeks ago for the 1st time since the rebuild and spotted it spraying oil from the pump housing (bad)...so there's oil pressure (good)!

Suspect it's just the banjo...

Lots of compression, so a knack to kick-start this is a must.

Magdyno refurbed but largely original (1930's internals?)...suspect it would benefit from a rebuild...but everything else I can think of done...

The engine and primary are both certainly post 38, if not post war. Have you got engine, frame numbers for checking.

just a advice; horn on that bracket will eventually crack seat support.
Use a flat horn bracket if you want to mount it there, but then on mudguard support.
This bracket should be up front on a 'U' shaped bracket

Hi Michael, I'm definitely interested in your bike. I joined as a newbie a week ago with the sole purpose of getting one of these bikes in memory of my dad. Rick Parkington from Classic Bikes identified the NH350 from an old photo I sent him so that's what I've been looking for. I logged on today to post a wanted advert and saw your post - seems like good timing :) Please can you get in touch to discuss further details, thanks, Doug

Thanks for the advice fellas. I'll look up the frame and engine numbers when I get home at the weekend. It was certainly a well used example! My father in law bought it from his best friend who had last used it in the late fifties I think. It had had a side car at some point in its past too.

Pre restoration crankcase was stamped BB800...I haven't checked if it's still the same...I think it is, but the engine had a nasty accident with the 1st reassembly when it met a rather fierce engine starter. I confess it was not I that mastered the rebuild. Barrel was stamped AB/135 B

See attached photo. It's pretty blurry but you can see the sidecar. Although I don't remember it, later on my mum would ride pillion with me in the sidecar. See below Rick's original email, thanks:

"Dad’s bike is an Ariel and has girder forks suggesting it is either immediately post-war or from the late 30s – the cylinder head design changed in 1938 and it has this type. Obviously it’s difficult to say much more with a picture this blurred but the height of the engine in relation to the fuel tank suggests it is a 350 rather than a 500, although the tank itself looks more like the 500cc size. If it is a 500 it will be a touring model VG or sports VH Red Hunter. Assuming it is a 350cc though, it will be an NG or NH Red Hunter, although it could also be an ex-WD model WNG as with new bikes unavailable, these were bought up in bulk after the war by the trade to be reconditioned in civilianised trim and sold.

Hope this helps

Rick Parkington"
