Part No 5854-29 I think - the screw in type rather than the bayonet fitting type. As the part number implies, it came into use in 1929 and I think was used continuously from then till the end of four stroke production. Whether the various oils recommended in stampings on the cap changed over the years I honestly don't know but the vast majority look the same to me. So this should widen and ease your search.

The ''early caps'', so from the late 20's to the late '30 did have a different engraving compared to the later ones as Paul stated. The model did stay the same. I experienced a genuine cap can get difficult to obtain, however there are Indian replica's on the market. You could also try Pete Kemp the single spares oranizer. Overhere (Holland) there are some for sale, but they come along with the oil tank...

I think drags have listed them in the past, but with no script on.

Simon, did you find an original oil tank cap, at a price that was affordable? I made a couple in Alum a while back, not 100% copies as I couldn't get the engraving done but they work on my 57 NH. See my posting on making them a while back, if your not looking for 100% originality then they do a job.
Cheers

I haven't found one yet, no. Interesting challenge for the lathe.

I've just re-read the thread, I shall see if my turning skills are up to it!
cheers

When I said I hadn't found an oil tank cap, it appears that I was wrong...

This is what happens when you collect bits over a period of years :

It appears that I have a cap after all.

Sorry folks.
