Plunger 8" brake plate wanted

Postby PeteL » Wed Jul 22, 2020 7:03 pm

I need an 8" brake plate for a plunger QD hub.
I have a swing arm Square 4 8" brake plate I'd be happy to swap.

Hmmmm, there is no such thing as a 8" swingarm SQ4 rear brakeplate.....unless it's a DIY job

Ok. I didn't know that. (obviously)
I have a QD hub on its way to me and the club member says it's 8" and from a swing arm SQ4.
It has a stud to fix a brake stay arm to rather than a slot cut in the brake plate to engage with the stop on the frame.
I want to fit it to my '52 VH500. Not that I especially want an 8" brake, its more the QD facility (partial) that I want.

There was an option to fit a 8" QD rear brake hub to a swinging arm frame, I had one on my 1955 single. I had purchased a SQ4 hub/brake assembly at an early annual rally (?Caddington), and had to obtain the S/A alloy brake plate to suit, I think I got it from 2M spares. I don't think this could be fitted to the 1956 on FWH models. With a 8" Norton front wheel fitted, the braking was an improvement on the original setup.

Hub & brake arrived today. In pretty good order. Sprocket & drum look good to use and the brake linings are excellent.
Photos attached.

Spindle threads seem to be the coarser 12tpi
Is this the earlier or later spec ? Is coarser preferable to finer or vice versa ?
