Wanted - Albion Model G gearbox (3 speed hand change)

Postby Simon.Gardiner » Mon Dec 04, 2017 1:47 pm

Apologies, not Ariel but getting desperate, and maybe some of guys here with good vintage contacts might be able to help.
For a 1930s AJW (NOT a Royal Enfield!), would anyone know the whereabouts of a 3-speed hand-change Albion Model G gearbox, or parts (shafts/gears)?

Had a hard think about that one Adrie but it's not the right one (also a lot of money for something that might also be mashed up inside).
It might be that the 'G' gearboxes had a number beginning with 'G' (the busted one is GA475)
Here's some photos in the faint hope that someone might recognize one

I would take the risc becouse the topgear is always prisedirect so the other gears cann't be much wrong, the outside is adopted to the motorcycle make.
You're not alowed to take it in to an airplane, there is oil inside.
You could thell them; "if the inside is good i'll take it", sending from there is cheaper than from England.

Adrie - you seem to be suggesting that all the 3-speed hand change internals are the same - did Albion really keep things that simple ?
There must have been some differences in the range of boxes produced - is there much info in the numbering ?
The bike is 1934, we've got an Albion catalogue for the early 1930s but it doesn't have the 'G' gearbox in it (it's actually got very little useful technical data, but it's all we've been able to find - most of documentation around is for Royal Enfields!)

You're having a choise between no box at all or a box where you maybe have to alter fitting or vary your engine sprocket.
Your 3rd gear will be the same as the old box now that's for sure.

Maybe you're in luck, a friend has bought a joblot with the inside of a 3 box, so if you give sizes and number of tooth.

Thanks Adrie - I'll see if I can sort out the details usefully.
