yes, strugling to balance a 35 watt headlight bulb, ammeter shows a slight discharge with the lights on, going to fit an LED headlight to this Leader which is only 24 watts so that should help. going to buy one of paul goffs stop/tail bulbs at the next kempton jumble and that should reduce the load a bit more, but only having 55 watts to start with and the ignition takes a fair bit with 2 x12v coils.

Yours will be pulling a bit more out of the system than mine, with the 2 x 12 volt coils.I have Pazon firing 2 x 6 volt coils in series, and a 16 watt halogen side light bulb that I use for daytime riding. I don't do very much dark riding so it stays ahead of the game. Using a solid state regulator. The only bother I had with the charging was in the early days and that was a crap battery. Are the magnets in your rotor in good nick as this has a bearing on output apparently. How the hell you test them is beyond me though. Good luck, Andy

Hi,

The later alternators (RM 18 ) fitted to some of the later bikes is said to give a few more watts. My Leader with Boyer ignition , 2x 6 volt coils , runs OK with a 40 watt headlight bulb on 12 volt. I've rcently changed the speedo bulb to an l e d type to reduce the load slightly but not used an l e d rear bulb because they do seem to be limited in output when viewed from some directions.

According to what I have found on a Google search of the 'net suggests that an RM21 gives an output of up to 120 Watts. I think that you can swap the earlier Lucas alternator for a standard RM21 set-up ?
Try Rex's Speedshop, and you can email them with questions if need be.

Hello,

I have a higher output alternator on my other Leader, 120 watt +, its useful for powering a bigger headlight and other items. It came from Paul Goff , the outside diameter was a bit tight in the mounting blocks and needed a small amount taking off the alloy blocks and part of the encapsulated wiring touched the crankcase door and needed moving out slightly using a washer on each mounting stud.

Evening Ken,

I used one of the original Ariel rotors, the magnets still seemed very strong and it works OK. The rotor is one of the larger ( diameter ) ones used on the later bikes.
