The TOP rubbers are usually much thinner and the bolts have to be the exact correct length. Lowering it may help. Nev

Thanks Nev, will keep fiddling.
Another question that's just arisen - petrol tap has sprung a leak after the outing today. It is not a type I am familiar with. Before I remove the tank and tap, can anyone tell me what sort if seal, if any, this tap has ?
Cheers, Bevan

Just the fit of the taper in the body under the action of the spring .You can dismantle it in situ but in either case the tank must be empty. Try tapping it into and out of the taper and exercising it. If the taper ends up too far in you might have to redrill the hole for the fuel to get full flow rate.

I have had a number of those taps over the years and found that they all eventually became too stiff to opperate without carrying a short tube for leverage. I don't believe they were ever factory fitted and to my mind are better suited for use as a gas tap( thats natural gas ). The other problem is that any foreign matter ie rust etc will act as a grinding paste and create anular ridges btn the working surfaces. Lapping with grinding paste is often suggested, but I think thats a waste of time.
I wont bore you all (again) with the problems I had with my Indian made tank, suffice to say it was too high causing the same probs as yours etc. etc.

My VHA made an annoying rattle. it turned out to be the damper knob that was vibrating.
