Ariels at Chas Cope

Postby GuyH » Sat Nov 23, 2019 8:39 pm

I was at Disco Dez Scooters at Dunley today as I'm restoring a 1952 Douglas Vespa rod model and naturally the conversation turned to Ariels. Des dug out some old photo's he has of one of Chas Cope's shops, probably in 1937 as there's an advertisement for reduced prices on 1936 models. He kindly sent me electronic copies for the forum in case they haven't been seen before....

I, for one, haven't seen these before. They are definitely 1937 model year photos as we have the new style knee grips but exposed valve gear and painted tank panels. So September 1936 to August 1937 but I would guess earlier rather than later, unless someone can give a more definitive date from the inferior makes on view.

Presumably this is Chas. E. Cope & Sons Ltd of Upper Hagley Rd, Edgbaston, Birmingham.

'CHA' is a Smethwick registration and there looks to be a 'Sold' tag on those bikes
which have numbers on. I'd wondered if this was a bit of showmanship too as Birmingham
had its own series of registration letters.

It says secondhand dept. and 1936 models on the shop window so there could be new last years models in 1937 or it is 1936.

I just put some random ‘CHA’ reg’s into the DVLA search, CHA615 is an Armstrong Siddley reg’d in October ‘36

That ties up exactly, Dave, with what I thought.

Doesn't the prefix D denote a 1937 registration? My 1937 VH has that on the original front number plate.
