51-53 rigid Single

Postby wade.edwards » Sun Jan 19, 2020 7:49 am

I have a set of rear L-mudguard stays for 51-53 rigid singles. Also have a one piece (no-hinge) rear mudguard that just needs the forward chain clearance indent formed. The plan is to combine the pieces on a rigid special, not of 51-53 vintage.
I only have a one view picture of one bike using this system. Does anyone have one of these Ariels fitted with these stays? I am aware that the guard is swing hinged near the voltage regulator but don’t know where else it is anchored and what has to be released to be able to swing it up to get the wheel out? Is it a pain or easy?

There is a support to the engine-plates but if you don't use it there shouldend be a problem.

Do you have a rigid 51-53 with this setup, Adrie?

Wade: Does this help?

Have a look at the 52-53 owners guide in the members section. Page 57 describes how the pivoting rear mudguard works.

This page on Drags site identifies the brackets https://www.draganfly.co.uk/ariel/4-str ... es-1951-55

Thank you Alan :D
There are resources that I often forget about. Still, no substitute for first hand accounts from real Arielists.
You can see from the posted pics that it is a rigid VB with a QD wheel and no lift handle because it has a rear carrier that can be grabbed to lift. Interesting combination. Anyone here that owns it?
I am guessing that this mudguard stay set up can be successfully used with a non QD wheel. Looks to be enough clearance once the guard is raised.
I was hoping to install beaded aluminum mudguards to cut weight as I am creating an alloy engine VH, rigid framed, lightweight special. Want the guards to be beaded for age related cred as the frame, BA and engine cases are all 46. Been chasing beaded alloy guards for many years but haven't given up yet. Just bought a set of Indian rigid/girder guards and have asked the manufacturer if he is able to provide similar, in aluminum but with no hinged rear section. So far no response.
This is not my biggest problem. The biggest is too many projects and not enough dosh to go full blast on all of them. Just keep picking away over the years. No dicipline

They are all dead, Eero. Hartley barrel and a trimmed VCH head.
